Brand new Apex owner...couple questions

I am the proud owner of a brand new 06 Apex er. O miles and and only ran it on and off the trailer. Last time it was running I let it warm up for the first time and it started to emmit a large amount of white smoke out of the pipes. This machine was not pdi'ed from a dealer and I am thinking this is the storage oil in the motor/exhaust burning off as it was still smoking for some time after it was shut off. The fluids are all good and no codes on display. Anyone seen this? Also I am leaning towards the drive it like you stole it method of break in, so I am waiting to stud the track and lots of snow before I even start it again. Any suggestion on 144 stud pattern and break in, I would love to hear your thoughts guys, great site.
 

My Apex had a bit of an odor, but I didn't notice the smoke. I bought my sled mid seaon, so I would have just got on and rode, and probably not have seen anythin burn off. Shouldn't be any problems with it, but if you continue to smell or see smoke after 100 miles or so, I'd be looking into things.
You'll open a huge can of worms if you ask about break in methods here. There are a million ways to skin that cat, but the one thing most people agree on is to vary the rpms during break in, and let it get to operating temp before romping on it. Do a search for "break in", and you'll have alot of reading.

We just took a attak out with no miles and when we stopped we could smell it burning off the machining oil.

Thanks guys, studs look awsome, we got about 40cm in the last three days. Not enough with the wind blowing it around for the new sled, but I may take out the old srx for a rip tommorrow if we get more lake effect. It looks very promising for a return to old fashion winter down here. I am dying to try out the Apex, but I think once I get it out I won't want to get off it!
 
Break in, I would do a couple of heat cycles, i.e., let the sled come up to full operating temperature, and then let the engine cool completely. Do this a coulple of times. Then when riding, vary the operating rpms, with no long, wide open throttle pulls for a couple hundred miles. Ride the sled hard, but just don't pin it for long stretches.

You made a good choice on your new sled.
 
they can smoke and smell quite a bit. Use of cosmoline for over seas shipment, oils and grease left over from the manufacturing process.

I have the same sled as you. My feeling is break it in by the book, after 50-100 miles start giving it some full throttle for just 4 seconds at a time and no longer with some cooling inbetween. Vary the speed of the engine. Studs, I would go at least 120.

Oh, to be honest a common problem for the 06 sleds was delamination of the idler wheels, watch for that the inside ones will likely go first.

I finally got some miles on the new Apex. It is one awsome machine. I love the power and smooth ride..it's amazing how far technology has advanced in the 5 years since the old srx. I went with the double and single woody's in the center(144)new studs are nice. The two middle wheels are delaminating already, although I was expecting this. What are good wheels for replacement? The smoke issue went away after the 26km I did the other night and I broke it in running up to about 100 and letting it slow done on its own. Now we just need some cold weather to freeze things up a bit more and I can get some real riding on it.
 
just ride it ,don't overheat it ,
after the first 100m , you are good to go ,
the wheels will probably not get worse
 
Your wheels should still be under warranty, even though its an '06. The warranty period starts from the day you bought it. They will replace them with '05 wheels, from the RX-1. That's what they did with mine, anyway, and it fixed the issue. Your hyfax will show alot of wear, and will wear quickly until about 60% of it is gone, and then they will stop wearing. After that, you shouls see a few thousand miles before replacing them. I replaced mine right away, and the first long ride I did, they were right back to were I started!
If you start flipping back the pages of this forum, get back to late season last year, and read through all the posts of everybody's solutions, issues, praises, comments, etc... You will probably find alot of real good information of issues during the season, since this season is still very early, and there are far more people online during the snow season.
