Broke oil tank tonight - I am an idiot

I am an idiot. You don't even want to know how i broke it...I realized my mistake later. Can't blame the design of the tank on this one!

Lefty loosey -- righty tighty? :drink: :o| :die

i was surprised when you said you tore the bung out
:bling

Yeah. Well i had the front end jacked up so I put my wrench on the drain plug while standing up next to the sled. I turned the wrench right.... like all of the other bolts i removed while standing up....funny thing is that logic doesn't work for bolts threaded in from the bottom of an object. Right is wrong sometimes. I have to stop working on this thing so late at night.

You can tell us. We,ve all been there. Maybe telling us would keep someone else from mking the same mistake. Don,t beat yourself up over it !

anyone that says they haven't made a bonehead move like that not only has but they're a liar to boot. we've all done things that make us curse at ourselves. i don't feel comfortable unless i screw up at least one thing a day :o|

Agreed and experience as well as learning costs :o|

I've been in Quality Control for 27+ years and to this day I still hear people say they never crashed a CMM. People that even run CNC's say "I've never crashed a tool"! To those people I say B.S. then you don't run anything but your mouth. Sometimes, #*$&@ just happens. Working late doesn't help. Hope you can get it welded/fixed in your area.

Might but better off taking it to a radiator shop for welding the thin aluminum as thats what they do daily.

I've been told we're all allowed one mistake per year. :o|

It was a stupid mistake. Just hate doing crap like that and ruining an expensive part. A few yrs ago i forgot to tighten my rear axle idler wheels and lost the entire rear end on a trail. I found a weld / fab shop near my office. Will check in with them on monday. The bottom of the oil rezzy is a bit warped from me torquing off the bung. Worst case i can buy a used one for $100 less than new.

Hi Metallicat

I bring 2 oil tanks for weld in the last years, it was to repair/prevent the famous crack that developed sometimes on the bottom of the tank on older vectors or venture. I went to a shop that repair car radiators and weld aluminium. They are used to weld thin aluminium and made me a great job for $50. I am sure that a well done weld job will be stronger than original....

and I am pretty sure you will think twice before removing this drain plug again :tg: you're not alone, we all made mistakes ...

We made a summer post on that, few years ago on a french forum...'' tell us about the most stupid thing you did about your snowmobile'' :Many pages and it was hilarous!!!

Bye
Alain

I had the front subframe off my Brothers Phazer and managed to tip it off the stand and I crushed radiator! I was about to buy a new one, but found a used one for a 1/3 the cost of new.

There are a few welding shops along 8mile between merriman and middlebelt if I remember correctly, they can fix the "bung" for you. Probably for cheaper than you think. Just make sure it is well cleaned of any oil residue before so the weld penetrates properly.

Good luck, I wish I had some shop names for you. If I owned my own equipment, I'd do it for you for free.

any tig welder worth his salt can fix it - these guys can tig on pop cans - should be able to take care of an oil tank. has to be clean clean clean first tho.

There is a place weld shop in Westland behind Ford Rd, sorry I can't think of the name that do good work.
