Buying sled in US Registering in Canada

I have a good friend that is looking for a new sled, Most know of the price difference from US to Canada. What is involved in Purchasing here in us then registering it in Canada? I know you would have to pay customs,
Is it worth it? Any info would be good. Thanks!

yamaha will drop the warranty. but i saved 3200.00 dallars when i purchased mine.

Most, if not all, USA dealers will not, and cannot, sell new sleds to Canadians. Doing so they can lose their dealership. But that doesn't prevent someone living in the US buying it and then "reselling" it to the Canadian but the State sales tax would have to also be re-imbursed to the US seller, which would negate any savings. And there would also be no warranty.

This would not affect used sleds that are out of warranty, even from a dealer. Even then, it is a lot of work to export it to Canada, having to clear US Customs by bringing the paperwork 3 days prior to bringing it over, then having to go through the RIV process. You also have to get a letter from the Manufacturer stating that all recalls have been dealt with.

I have purchased 2 pre-owned Vectors in the US and the process is not too painful. US Customs have simplified their end by accepting an email from any dealer that is selling to a Canadian. All the dealer has to do now is email the VIN and the name of the purchaser 72hrs before export. You show up with the paperwork and as long as it checks out you are good to go. At the CDN border you fill out the RIV Form 1 and pay the GST. You can pay the RIV fee online when you get home. I get a service record from the dealer and that is sufficient for recall clearance. You can also reference Yamaha USA website for any recalls as they publish them on their site. Send that info to RIV and then you just wait for RIV to send you the CDN Tire inspection form in an email and take sled to get inspected. They stamp your Form 1 and you can go register at your provincial motor vehicle branch after paying your PST.

I think it is still a deal to buy in the US, not to mention that there is no selection for good used sleds here in NB.

You have to check with the particular US Customs Border point you intend to cross at as they operate differently. Some may accept faxed documents, others maybe email but the NY ones require that the papers be brought in by hand. No mail. Although they are basically the same agency, they operate differently from office to office so call ahead.
