With all the chaincase problems of late: i.e. blown sight glasses, tension roller bolts backing out, top gears without an oil hole in the bushings, etc., has anyone switched to a belt drive setup like the C3 Powersports SyncroDrive?
If so, how do you like it?
I contacted a company who supplies them and was told they're available for the Sidewinder (though you do lose reverse), and they've sold kits to guys running 600hp in outlaw sleds and they do stand up to higher horse power.
The kit I've shown below is just an example (its for or a ARCTIC CAT PROCLIMB/PROCROSS 1100 )

Sounds cool but for me putting on 5000km+ a winter there's no way I could deal with no reverse lol

One vendor I checked said the kit costs $1295cdn + 115cdn for a spare belt.
Seems very reasonable to avoid all the stock chaincase related problems AND be able to easily switch gearing, and most importantly, belts (if ever even necessary), trailside!

I tried this setup for a short period of time and didnt like. Gear ratios arent great (and i put the highest gear ratio). They give you an oil plate backplate which basically bolts to stock oil tank. No reverse was a deal breaker for me. I still have the kit if anyone is serious. $450 cdn (needs a new belt). The shaft is for an 1100 turbo so splines are different on clutch side. Perfect setup is to get an STM secondary and you're in business (2012-2015 procross).

Leaving the "no-reverse" feature aside for the moment, would just the 'limited' availability of gear ratios have been enough for you to still swap back to a chain and chain case?

Eric at Speed Shop Inc., says: As long as your Sidewinder has the regular length chaincase (and not the longer chaincase in it like the mountain versions) then there is a kit available for it. The Viper version works on the sidewinder too.
BD-X has a kit with an oil tank set-off, and includes one of their BDX jackshafts and has 3630 Grams (8 lb) less rotating mass, and 11 lb weight savings

Tom Kobza at TKI LLC at www.tkicnc.com also has a kit in the works and says:
Yes we do make one that will fit. You will need to replace the factory jackshaft with one from BDX that has a Yamaha clutch side with a AC chaincase side. You will also need to find a oil tank for the motor oil, we are working on having a guy build us a tank for the 4 strokes...
BS-X Jackshaft - YAMAHA HD JACKSHAFT, NO REVERSE OR FOR BELT DRIVE: LINK
If you are looking to remove reverse on your Yamaha for less weight, this is the shaft that you need.
It has the Yamaha spline on the clutch side, and then Arctic Cat non reverse style spline on the chaincase side. You would simply use Arctic Cat style upper sprocket. Our heavy duty jackshaft also allows you to put a C3 or other brands belt drive kit on.
