I cant find anything on what adjusments do. What is affected when screwd shorter vs longer?

Loosen the lock nut (closer to the rear), adjust threads by turning nut closer to the front. More threads showing = more ski lift. Fewer threads = more ski pressure. Set to middle, try and adjust.
You can DL your manual from the FAQ thread and read "Adjusting the control rod".
Be careful not to adjust to far out and make sure the lock nut is tight enough. Once you have ice build up trail side adjustment is impossible. I can never loosen the thing with the tool. I use channel locks.

a screw driver and hammer also works well to loosen/tighten the jam nut
