Took my sled to the dealer for the once over on my sled before the warranty expires. I also had the dealer clean the carbs and change the oil why they had it. The dealer called and said the #2 carb heater was cracked. Anyone else ever have this problem? Sled ran perfectly all last year, 4000 miles. Can you damage this by installing the airbox?

I damaged 1 when I unplugged it to change the jets. Had to order it and it took 3 weeks to get. I rode almost 1000 miles in that 3 weeks and didnt notice a thing differant in how it performed, cold or hot. The dealer says it only comes on during cold start up. I don't think you could damage it by the air box.

ARE THOSE CARB HEATERS REALLY NEEDED? What would happen if you disconnected them?

Are they saying that the heater is cracked or just the plastic that covers the wire. The plastic broke on one my heaters, just epoxied a small piece of plastic back on. I think you would have to hit it hard to break the heater itself. My two cents or is it three to a Canadian.

Pinball, its about 25cents Canadian but its getting better. I also broke one rode it several times without it didn't see a diffrence but replaced it anyways. The #1 thing you should do if you havn't already is put in a shut off for the anti-freeze part of the carb heat. Leave it off unless you have to use it.

Are they really needed? Well that depends if you can afford a new motor or not! Leave them hooked up, they're not hurting anything being hooked up. They come on I believe when the water temp is below 86* to prevent any ice accumulating in the carb bowls if there would be some water in the gas. If you unhook them you risk the chance of freezing up a jet and burning the motor up. just my .02!

Carb Heaters
The carb heaters are controlled through a circuit from the CD box and come on any time the coolant temp drops below 86 degrees F.

Do they also come on when the engine is not running?

No they do not come on untill the engine is running, even if the key is on. Ive been told they are to help from carb venturi freezing up when the engin temp is low, then the coolant heaters kik in and take over.
