Anyone know what the proper way to do this is? They don't really say how in the manual, and I have not touched mine from new. It's seems a bit sloppy, but I could be wrong...

According to the service manual:
"Loosen the locknut.
Turn the adjusting bolt clockwise until it is finger tight, and then loosen it 1/4 turn.
Hold the adjusting bolt in place while tightening the chain adjusting locknut."

mbw is correct.
Make sure you just hand tighten the adjusting bolt and do not over do it. Just go until you can feel the chain get snug, then back it off a 1/4 of a turn. As said make sure you hold the adjustment bolt with a wrench as you tighten the lock nut.
A little loose is better than way too tight.
