chaincase cover reinstall shift fork position? & broken

Changed my track on my 08 nytro, used ulmers pics out of the nytro faq sticky and it was a great help....but I was trying to figure out how you know the shift fork for reverse is in the right position when reinstalling the chaincase cover. I have put the case on while holding the reverse linkage up and actually placing the linkage on the bolt it attaches to while sliding the case on but didn't really feel anything snap in to place. I put it on with the fork in the lower position but then the linkage won't reach the bolt. If the linkage goes on the bolt is it good? Is there any way to test to know it's right besides filling the case and putting in reverse?
My second issue is when I took my chaincase cover off initially I found the bolt for the lower sprocket is broken off. There was no bolt head or debris in the chain case so I am assuming the previous owner snapped it off. I have run the sled 900 miles since I got it and there is no damage in the chaincase. Should I try to get the bolt out of the shaft or will it be ok to leave it? I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

There's an updated bolt for that lower gear. I would get it out and replace it. An easy out should remove it. As far as the reverse, when engaged properly, you should be able to pull up on the linkage and feel the tension from the spring. I'm pretty sure it engages from the bottom. The rx is that way for sure.

I found it took a few tries, but you will know when you get it right. I put the arm in the up position and as I put the cover in place lower the arm to match up with the gear. Takes a bit of trying but when I did my Vector after I got it first try.

As for the broken bolt I would replace, there is an updated part form the dealer, don't know if it will last any longer but I wouldn't ride without it.

it.

x2 what i did with my nytro the other day.

You will also find that if the fork is incorrectly positioned the the cover will feel as if it's resisting sealing against the other half. You can actually put the bottoms together and look in the case while you position the fork visually. Once you've done it you'll remember. lol Change out the bolt with the newer type and have a 5mm spacer machined and put inside the bushing to butt up to the drive shaft. There is a thread on here you can search for because it was a hot topic a year or so ago.

4000 km's without the bolt. No problems.
I'd say leave it and get rid of one problem.
Better without it, than having a broken bolt laying in there.

Can anyone verify that the new bolts are not breaking?

Personally I would have a bolt in there. I would think that if you had a catastrophic failure of the clutch side bearing the whole shaft could come out of chaincase. My 08 snapped this bolt, my 2010 has been good so far.

At Finland new bolt was warranty issue, I think they replaced it with tougher one. Not sure if that fixed the problem when there is tension to drive axle when heavy bottoming or good grip after jumps.

X2, 3k miles of abuse for me with no bolt. My RTX actually had the bolt in it when I got it and I didn't put it back in.

JMO, not that it's right or wrong but it works for me so I have no reason to change.

Great input, thanks guys. :rocks: I'll go back after it this weekend. Sure am glad that bolt head wasn't floating around in the case or that could be ugly.

I don't think the bolt head could float around in the chaincase?? At first I couldn't find it either when I took my case apart but after a little search it was resting inside the "collar" (#71 in the fiche) It is sandwiched between the case cover and this collar, could wear the case cover though, heard of that happening.

How did you change the track without removing this bolt?
Obviously it's broken and he never noticed, if he doesn't remember torquing it out or in.
