Chaincase oil change

Well I went to try to drain my APEX GT chaincase using the drain bold behind the tunnel, that thing was siezed in there. So I pulled the brakes, removed the reverse linkage, then pulled the case. Little oil left, very black and very very thick. OK, I confess I haven't changed it since I bought the sled two and a half seasons ago and it now has 7000 miles on it. Anyway, cleaned it all up inside all looked really good, put it back together and began to put oil back in . I am using Mobil 1 synthetic CL5 75-140, its expensive but that's all they had left at the autoparts store. My question is... I put in about 4-5 oz and ran the sled on the lift, then let it settle and checked it. I noticed that it has a standard and a revers side with arrows. My reading is at the top arrow on the reverse side. Is this accurate? if so, why is the requirement lower if you have reverse???

Use the STANDARD mark...I'm from Tolland,ct. Where do you ride? My best bud comes up from Clinton & we ride in Maine every weekend.
 
I grew up in Vernon, some of my family still lives up there. I moved to Milford after school for work, been here for about 14 years now. I ride two to three times a year in Lac St Jean or Gaspe. Usually 4 - 6 days each trip.
 
Yep I agree fill to the top of standard mark, about 8-8.5 ozs. Should use 75-90 75-140 is to thick, but better than what you had

Don't take this the wrong way, but were you turning the drain bolt the wrong way? You need to turn it clockwise to remove as you're looking at the chaincase.
The correct amount is 250cc of oil (which makes using the Yamaha chaincase lube nice, the bottle is 250cc).
The std/rev marks on the dipstick is due to it being an old design. When older models had reverse (stock or added) the reverse chaincase cover was deeper (for the extra gears) so the same required amount (250cc) of oil would show up lower on the dipstick.
 
Dealers mechanic told me that if it has the reverse gear to maintain it to that mark also. This because the extra gear displacing oil I guess??? Maybe he was just feeding a line...
 
erosled, woke up around 2am and started thinking, i was turning it the wrong way, i was upsidedown, unreal, stupid! Anyway, I will add more oil today to bring the level up
 
I think I figured out why the std vs reverse marks are different. As pointed out earlier, the extra gears in the reverse gear box make the outside cover wider than the cover without reverse. Therefor, the same amount of oil will sit lower in the case with a wider box. I think that the oil being at the very top of the revers arrows should be sufficient and the owners manual actually points that out. The actually say that the standard mark is not applicable on the APEX because it comes with reverse from the factory.
