chaincase oil smell?

I think the 07's had some issue's yet even with the wider landing area for the gasket. As people got away from the Yamaha oil (non synthetic) and wen't to a synthetic the temps reduced and the problem's wen't away.

I thought this issue was on the 06-07 Vector motors only. I had to update to the 08 chain case cover to get it to stop leaking. The updated cover has a wider gasket seat

Been a while, I guess it was 08 when the change was made but synthetic made a huge dif due to heat from long high speed running. Gaskets and seals had a hard time with the heat. I took my side panel off after some long 60 to 80 MPH running when my 06 was new. Could have burnt my hand on it! After synthetic it was still hot but I could easily put my hand on it.
I don't remember hearing about Vector chain case problems as much as Apex's.

It is a 2010 Apex Ltx. I checked the oil level and all is good. No leaks. I smelled it and it was that I was smelling for sure. Will be changing the oil in spring anyways.

Not that it maters where it was purchased but I get it at Fleet Farm and it is better than the Yami gear oil. Gear case temps are much lower than the Yamaha oil, many thousands of mile's over the years with no problem's. Six K on my first Apex on original chain and gear's and they looked like new. Attak now has around eight K with no issue's. I can probably buy a quart for what you pay for 8OZ. LOL

Oh boy, another Yamalube/Mobil-1 oil debate  (j/k)

Been using Mobil-1 75-90 syn gear oil for years now myself and never ever had any issues, nor have I ever smelled gear oil (never heard of that before actually)

It's great stuff imo ;)!

Definitely not just a Vector issue. I blew the chaincase on my 06 Apex, and when I say it blew... it blew! The chain went out the bottom and side and the hot oil started my side panels on fire. My sled was fixed under warranty and I remember cross referencing the warranty parts that the shop received. The chaincase cover part number was not the same as the original part number, nor the "update" that listed on later models. There were at least 3 variations to the cover that Yamaha made to the Apex.

Ya and the graphics say MEOW!
The 2 shoulda been a 1.

Check your vent.

My Nytro had a problem with the vent. It would build a little pressure in the chaincase and "Puff" it out all at once and you'd get a wiff of gear oil.

I modified the internal passage in the vent a bit, and problem solved.

OTM

I smelled gear lube last week for the 1st time on my '11 SE. Chain case was warm but not hot. Oil level appeared to be normal. I guess I will just keep an eye on it??????

High speed runs for a ways - oil heats up,chain and gears spinning and spininng and spinning and spinning fast wind >>>>.smell will get pushed out dipstick vent.happened twice to me 8500mi.nothing is wrong,so figured this is what it is.great oil, level, seal, case, dipstick vent etc.
