Thewhitedogg said:I just changed mine today. First thing I did was soak the rail with wd-40 to hepl break them loose. Undid the screw up front, used a hammer and screwdriver to pound the slides right out the back. I did have to trim a little bigger opening in the track window to get them out. Had them both changed in 15 min.
A freind of mine has a hyfax removal tool that I used last time. It reminds me of a dent puller. Its a long steel rod that has a replacable screw in the end. The idea is to drill a pilot hole in the end of the hyfax and then screw in this device. You then slide this weighted collar to the other end and the force of each thrust pulls the hyfax right out. Problem is, the tool is old and doesnt have any name on it and we are out the the replaceable screws. Has anyone else seen or have one of these? We'd like to find out where we can get some replacement screws.
Just go to any hardware store and get a long coarse thread screw that will fit into the end of the piece that screws onto the rod of the slide hammer. All I use is my 5lb dent puller that I've had for many years. That's all that slide puller is. And you'll be back in business.

These machines aren't necessarily intuitive to work on, and the Yamaha shop manuals tend to be a little...uh...cryptic in many areas. There's no substitute for experience, and this site is invaluable for using the experience of others in making up for the experience we lack relative any given project.

Defeats the purpose of this site, now doesn't it?

RealDeal said:I would do it just like Rocker dan said. I just walked in from the garage and changed my slides in less than 20 mins. The only difference I did was I sprayed wd-40 in the track opening that I was taking the slide out of and the opening to start the new slide in. I used oem slides. I've heard of this method before ,but this is the first time i've had a sled with reverse to try it on. Major time saver!!!
I think with my skinny slides they even go thru windows easier...good job.
Dan
BE CAREFULL using reverse to remove slides,I had the damn hyfax slide forward on the rail and bust off the rail end cap.First and last time that's going to happen.I peel mine off with vice grips, not ard and NOT dangerous! Jay

Sorry guys if I sound like an idiot. I consider myself mechanically inclined, but for some reason I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around how the "reverse method" works.
If the track is rotating in reverse, I am assuming that it must be the front end of the hyfax that is pryed off the rail and pulled through a track window, correct?
If so, it would seem to me that the hyfax must then travel with the track up and around the front axle and into the tunnel?
I keep visualizing the front end of the hyfax possibly hitting the front heat exchager if it is initially pulled too far out of the window?
Thanks in advance for helping me understand this.

I have changed a few slides thus far, and the reverse method scares the crap outta me. Recently I did the cuts in the track windows which was great, then loosened the track and gently punched them out with an air chiselgun. Worked like a charm and them puched new ones on after lubing with hammer end of airchisel. 15 minutes flat both sides.

I have changed many slides on my many Yamaha's over the years by pulling them out the back through a track window. This method has always worked quick and easy for me.
I had never heard of this reverse method before reading this post. This is my first sled with reverse so I am curious how exactly it works (see my questions in my last post above).
Thanks again for any help understanding this fully.

Which window? straight out to rear at the same level as the rail?or do you place the slider in a window below the rail after peeling it off the rail some ? if it's straight back I assume you have to get the slider started backing out some how to go through the rear window.

I always have used a punch at the front to drive the slide back through a track window and then grab it with a vice grip.
However I still would like for someone to explain the "reverse method" in detail please. (see my first post in this thread).
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me fully understand the reverse method

LOL....dude,if you put a big screwdriver into rear window near where you adjust your track tension...(sled up on stand).....then pry downward on plastic slider between aluminum rail and plastic slider...you will pry the plastic off the rail, and out of window..the track will rotate abit and plastic slider will stick thru window....
now just start motor and put in REVERSE...the track now spins backwards and tears slider off until it just falls onto ground....about easiest thing you will ever do...wont hurt a thing either....just take it slow, one at time.

Thanks Dan,
Now I can visualize this perfectly as the slide does not travel but rather just peels off the rail.
Now I wonder how xc8j knocked the rail end cap off the front. You would think that the hyfax wouldn't have enough forward force as it is peeling off?
In any case I really do apreciate your reply. I trust that your lol comment wasn't mean spirited because I have always found everyone to be helpful even when us newbies ask a dumb question.
I truly do love this site and will probably ask a few more dumb questions so thanks in advance for putting up with me.

I've used the "reverse drop" (lol) twice now..........very easy......nothing to be scared of.
It actually impressed a couple long time sledders friends of mine who had never thought of it!!
Just pull the hyfax through the window about 3 to 6 inches.......start the sled.......put in reverse...........hit the gas sharp........out come the slides!! It happens so fast.....you will never know it happened!! LOL!
Good Luck!
