I've read a few posts regarding the leaking chaincases. Is this eventually happening to all of them ,and after high speed runs that heat the case up ?
More importantly - is the fix to replace the outer case or just the outer case seal will fix it ??
Is this something Yamaha will cover out-of-warranty or is that still a grey area

08s come with a new COVER which has more LEDGE around lower gear,to hold the gasket better...

if you have an 06 or 07,you MAY be able to get a cover under warrantee if you have seapage.

look at my 6000 mile review thread.....i show a picture of the older cover and am pointing to where it leaks.

MANY MANY people have never had an issue....

so - If you replace with just the seal, do they give you an 08 seal or another 06-07 seal ? Is the 08 seal different from the 06-07 seals or is it just the 08 cover that is different?
Doesn't seem worth the while to replace with the same seal if the cover is the real culprit. I looked \up the cover - almost $200

i have 3500 miles on my 06 RTX and have never had a leak. this is after many many high speed runs. Mine has never leaked. Are you saying it will in the future? Why hasn't it yet.

Not saying anything - other than I wonder why some leak and others never develop the leak .

Mine leaked twice, once was the oil seal and once was because of the cover, however, before I shelled out the cash for a new cover, I cleaned it all out, put some RTV silicone on both sides and carefully replaced the same gasket making sure that it held properly in place. 1500 miles later and (of course) high speed runs, not a drop leaked out.

So far so good.

all the gaskets are the same....

if it doesnt leak,it probably wont!....most people who had seaping had it within first 1500 miles...

also, its a good idea to run full synthetic oil...and fill it to STAND line(not reverse line)......also change the chain lube at least ever season IMO.

the pic below shows the original 06/07 cover where it can seap....if you look close you can see where the black markings from the GASKET are not fully seated on the OLD style smaller ledge..

08 covers are new design, larger ledge....I got one under warrantee end of first season...as these updated covers were available then, but yammie didnt install them as standard covers until 08 model year.
