Clunking noise from track

Did you buy this sled new? Or....how long after you bought it did you start to hear this sound?

I didn't buy it new, I'm third owner. It has made the noise since I bought it. The left drive shaft bearing was bad so I thought replacing it would fix it. After I replaced it I didn't ride it until this past weekend. The guy who had it before me took all the studs out of the stock track, some of them ripped through the track. Next season I would like to put a new track in and at that time I will probably replace the drivers along with it while it is out. My son's 06 Attak has a fully clipped Ice Attak track which I like, he has no track howl.

OK now I understand. I think if you pull the chaincase apart you will find that the two gears that have a tiny spring between them...might not have the tine spring between them. Or there's something that wasn't put back together right when the chaincase was taken apart. My 05 was making a similar noise at one point. I'm beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what I did to correct it.

Your reverse linkage might be out of adjustment as well. It's almost as if the gears are SLIGHTLY in reverse and when you hit the gas it's remeshing fully into forward.

Does this make sense?

Sure, makes perfect sense. I'm off tomorrow, I think I'll pull it apart and check it out and I'll adjust the linkage too. Definitely a place to start, I'll post back on my findings. On the parts diagram it looks like the spring is on the large gear that shifts back and forth to the smaller gears to change rotation. Thanks again

Don't pull your chaincase apart until you have checked (and adjusted?) the linkage. The adjustment must be VERY precise. The 1.06" horiz. dimension is important, but IMO the vertical adjustment of the shaft is what is most critical (as long as the 1.06" dimension is set perfectly).

Not sure if all the parts fiches are the same, but I'm talking about the very small spring (18) that goes between the 2 small gears.

Ok, not sure what your measuring I'll have to look at it tomorrow. I see the spring you are talking about, will check linkage first.

Is the 1.06" dimension between the two jam nuts on adjustment rods on shift linkage?

Try this video Jim, if you listen close you can hear the clunking noise.

That thud thud thud sound? Or I think I hear a slight clink clink clink towards the end?

This is all happening while the track is moving?

Does it make the noise when the sled is on a stand or just on the ground?

If any of the above is true you need to check all of your idler wheels and well as a complete and thorough inspection of the track.....literally inch by inch. The track clips as well.

This sound might be coming from one of the idler wheels hitting a hole(s) where the studs used to be.

I don't stay on this site 24/7.....that's why I PM'd you my phone number. I'm not going to sell your phone number or anything!

I just put all new wheels on my 05 Venture. They were warped and worn. Bottom shaft at shock was bent down a little and shock was rubbing on track and studs intermittently. Very little clearance in there anyway. That was my noise issue. Good luck

sws564 and I talked on the phone. Pretty sure it's track related. Small chunk of track (studs were moved and holes left) hitting a wheel or it's one of the wheels hitting a hole where a stud head used to be. It doesn't make the sounds when it's on a stand.

Haven't heard anything since Thursday. Hope all is OK!

All's ok Jim, thanks for asking, after we talked I went over the track carefully and could find nothing obviously wrong, other than the spots where the studs were ripped out.You are correct about the wheels going over the holes where the studs were, they are a couple holes ripped through which the wheels are rolling over also, I'm sure that isn't helping with the track noise either. I have come to the conclusion that there is something going on internally with the track, like when a belt breaks inside a tire maybe. The track also has some lugs that are partially ripped off, don't think it has anything to do with it but maybe a sign of the kind of life it had.
