If Big Venom isn't machining, how are they fixing spring bind? The secondary is machined to alleviate the spring bind allowing full shift out of the secondary.
I do not know probably has to do with the secondary spring they include in the kit just like Ulmers requires no machining with his either. The spring bind is on the stick secondary spring

Why is this? Shouldn't machining make the clutches preform more efficiently in overdrive so they can go faster? This seams counter intuitive.
What exactly are you machining? How does it work and what does it do for you? Is everyone machining the same thing? Clutching is voodoo to me, I'm an electrical engineer... I need some explaining.
I seam to remember another thread explaining you are machining the two halves to come closer which allows an 8DN belt to be used without damaging the clutch. This seams completely different.
Machining clutches for overdrive just makes it so that the clutches can travel more and have more speed, in theory. However it takes a lot more power for the engine to be able to overdrive the clutches, this is where the inefficiency comes from

So what exactly is being machined to the clutches for this overdrive? I need a clutch kit, but this machining for overdrive got me interested.... I could then use the same belt for my viper and Nytro

You can put the 8dn belt on now. Just have to add some washers to Deflection adjusting bolts on back of secondary or get the OSP adjuster. Decide which belt you are going to use and then get your clutch kit. Hopefully tuned for that belt. 8DN,Gates and Dayco XTX are all great choices but they all affect clutching. So what exactly is being machined to the clutches for this overdrive? Secondary they machine the spring pocket deeper for spring bind, bottom of sheaves so they can be adjusted closer together for a worn 8DN and for overdrive might be a few areas in both clutches. Just remove springs and put belt in. You will see what all interferes with more travel. 90% of people with a NA sled will never need all of that travel. Motor just doesnt have the power to use it. Turbo I am sure needs more than that which means gearing. I have yet to see one single person be all excited over Clutch Machining and what it did to help unless something else was wrong to begin with.

Sorry for the late response as I was out of town for the weekend....
The Big Venom kit comes with a different secondary spring that will not bind like the stock (Pink) does. The spring is real close to the stock secondary spring final rate, but a softer initial rate to get the traction off of the line and a smoother take off with lots of grunt down below.
As far as the machining, I feel it makes the clutching work better....
1- for the 8DN belt
2- for the primary to come together more
For those that do get to that point (either have the horsepower or maybe just a rip across the lake), they will use all of the clutching that is there when machined. Most guys like Cannondale said will not use all of the clutching and some have changed gearing so they don't have to mess with cutting the primary. I admit... I have some mods that really help me, but before machining I would put a mark on my clutching and it would show over a 1/4" inch from the top of my primary. Now, I have less than a 1/16".
Bring on the snow!!!
