:ORC I had a visit from our Service Rep and questioned him on the clutch noise. I also have one, and the noise is not that bad. He informed us that shimming the clutch to eliminate the noise will likely hamper performance. The towers are tapered, and that is why the noise disappears when you accelerate. The noise will not cause any damage, and again, shimming will likely cause a loss of clutch performance. I have not had the chance to test it yet and I have not had any of our customers complain yet. But then again, there is no fricken snow in the sahara of Minnesota. I will keep you posted on any differences if the situation arrises.

I had the eight thousandth's shim's put in because mine was louder than other's, The clutch does not bind anywhere through the stroke and shift's at exactly the same WOT throttle RPM and is mutch quieter, so i can't see where it will efect performance with no binding but that is the key,NO BINDING. However they are not all going to except that shim size with out binding and that is all that is available frome Yamaha at this time. If you are going to do the shiming you need to be careful not to get them to tight. Due to the power pulse of the long stroke tripple four stroke the clutch need's to be tighter than what we are use to. Frome what i under stand Yamaha is working on a fix and may!! put something out on this later. And they will work just fine the way they are so there is no rush to get it done. Hope this help's. kviper

I seem to remember reading that someone (maybe Flipper?) had theirs shimmed, but after putting on several hundred more miles....the rattle came back?
I think I'm going to hold out on having mine shimmed until I hear what Yamaha USA has to say about it......if anything.

Yep, that was me.
Nice and quiet after the mod, now several hundred miles later the rattle is back.

I'm replying to that post because to shim the clutch it's not the solution. The noise will eventually come back like Flipper said and even decrease performance. I was one of the first in Canada to get my Vector service and I mentioned to my dealer about the clutch noise. He contacted Yamaha Canada and them contacted the manufacture and they said a new clutch for the 2006 model is on its way. The manufacture decided to sent them one(or more) and put it on mine for testing. I’m not sure if they have installed this new clutch kit on others but for sure it is on mine. It's seems working fine and no noise anymore. I have only few hundred miles since then. I'm going for a long trip in a couple of week in the North of Quebec, Canada and I will test it. I should be able to do 1000 miles on this trip. I will post my result when I come back. In the mean time, enjoy the riding on your new sled. I'm sure that they will eventually get a kit for everyone in a time soon.

You will have to explain to me how shimming will hurt the performance of this clutch if it is set up so it is not binding. I have about 200 MI on since it was done, It has not regained any noise so far and there has been no change in performance frome before or after. I know yamaha is working on a fix and if the noise is tolerable i would recommend waiting to. But will not hurt if done correctly. kviper

I'll say this about the clutch noise. I can understand why somebody would go to the effrot to shim to get rid of it. It's a little embarassing to be showing off your new $7,000 plus sled just to have it rattle like a diesel engine at idle. Whether it's a problem or not, it sure is annoying.

kviper, you are right that will not affect the performance if it's done right. That's the problem, if the tech knows what to do no problems, but I have seen one during my trip to Quebec and the guy was complaining of a loss in performance with his Rage. It's seems to us that his clutch was shimmed to tight. But like I mentioned, Yamaha are testing a new clutch on their 2006 models and I was lucky to have one shipped to my dealer and installed on my Vector. So far it's working great. I will be able to test it in a couple of week. I'm going for another long trip and should be able to do between 1000 to 1200 miles. Let you know of how it performed when I come back.
QCRider, in the mean time enjoy your new sled. I Hope that a new clutch kit be available soon for everyone.

Is your clutch totaly different or was it just set up diferently. I herd Yamaha was thinking of somthing to tighten the spider to a perfict fit with out binding like a spring washer. Can you tell us what you have or what is different. kviper

Sorry kviper, I should have been more precise. It is a clutch kit that they sent to my dealer. I think it included the spring, spiders, bushings all parts needed inside except the casing. So it will look the same outside except for the inside of the clutch. My dealer said it would be better at the long run than shims. We will see. Like I said I will test it in a couple of weeks and keep you info on that. I will also ask my dealer to get me more details on that clutch kit and see if Yamaha are going to install this new kit on all 2005 models or it will be at the option of the dealer to replace it.
