Went through 2 belts this season. The first one was due but the second only had 1000 miles on it. After the second one it is squealing on the belt at idle. I did notice that one of the buttons on the secondary is broken in half. I need to go through both the primary and secondary to check for wear and anything else that could be broken that could be causing this.

My question is the wear grooves in the sheaves. My primary is getting pretty big grooves in it and there is a groove in the secondary as well. To others with experience how big of an issue is this? I have read posts of people having them turned. Is it safe to have this done? What kind of problems would the grooves cause?? Belts, performance, reliability? I have a 2005 Vector with 12K miles.

When I bought my sled back in 05, I also saw grooving marks on my primary and lots of squealing at idle with the 8DN original belt. I quickly removed the 8DN and replaced it with the Ultimax 3 #138-4432U3 before any further damage could result. This stopped the squealing and any further scoring on the primary. There are now a few other belts available from other mfg.s that are just as good if not better. A lot of riders like the 8DN belt but, I like my 8DN belt hanging on the garage wall.

So true of the Mighty 8DN it is a very hard compound belt and although it last a long time ,it will put grooves in your clutches ,wearing them out prematurely. I myself do not run the 8dn , then again im not an advocate of aftermarket belts either, If you can find the old 8CH belts, that's what I run ,they will do you well. another belt you might wanna try is the 89L.
