Installed an Ulmer clutch kit at the end of last season and was very happy with it. Sent out my secondary a few weeks ago to Ulmer to get machined for 8dn belt and new red spring. Installed it yesterday and took it out for a test ride yesterday. It's only turning 82-8300 rpm. Last season it was right at 9000. I can't get ahold of Allen and I'm heading to the u.p. On Friday. Checked setup and it was on 2 and 6 like the spec sheet says, anyone have any ideas? Thinking I'm just going to put the stock spring back in

Installed stock spring at 6 and 1. Brought rpms up about 8500. Still a ways from 9000. Guess I'll try 6 and 2

I know Allen is swamped with work and the number of clutch kit's he has sold and is sending out daily is unbeleavable! Probably just hasn't gotten to your message yet. More wind should pick up some RPM, probably won't have coil bind with machining but compress clutch to make sure till you can talk to Allen You could pull a washer or two off each weight also. I'am not formiliar with his Viper set up so I can't get specific. One washer should be a gram and one washer off of all three weight's should gain you aprox 150 RPM. I won't say how many kit's he has sold but it would be understandable if there was a mistake made?

I noticed the same thing as well, but I made it worse as I added more weight to the heel of the clutch weights. Last year it was running perfect rpm at wot on the top end but I was hitting the Rev limiter on take off so I added additional weight hoping to get it right but I guess with the new spring in the secondary it changed everything. I guess I will be spending a little more time to get it right again or at least close to right anyway. I don't mind though as it's teaching me a little more about clutching and how you will feel the difference a small change will make. I was hoping to call Allen to discuss this but I think I will wait till after Christmas and fool around with it a bit on my own first.

Things will probably lighten up soon for Allan and I'am sure he will have answer's for you.

i have full exhaust, allens clutch kit (deep snow) , with power comander and allens air intake
best i'm seeing is 8500. 8600 but then slowly drops off..
at first after i installed it. it would bounce off the rev lmt down low... i put 2 washers on the heel and that made it better.. later took one off.
still cant get the rpms close to 9000 while wot..
not to happy . but it sounds good.
I'm by far no clutching guru but wish i could get it straight.
Allens been great getting back to me. just dont want to keep bothering him .
any pointers would be appreciated.

Usually the harder the snow condition's are the higher RPM will be. Driven clutch will not cense full load in loose snow so primary keeps on shifting=lower WOT shift RPM. I set my clutches up for optimum RPM on good hard condition's because that's what we usually drag race on. With the broad torque curve of these four strokes I'am not to worried about RPM in loose snow condition's. Also not to concerned about back shift with all the Torque either. Obviously a deep snow big track set up would need to be tuned for that condition. Also agressive clutching will generally not show it's benefit in loose condition's. I always said as far as drag racing is concerned, Loose snow is an equalizer.

I am at 9100-9160 Ice,Hardpack or Slushy wet snow for miles. Only thing that changes is the MPH with conditions.
Quit messing around and put the 8DN on there. 300-350 rpm will be gained with that simple change. Here is pic of my Ulmer setup. Tuned by me.

i have the 8dn on it..

6-1 red secondary spring, orange pink orange primary. Stock exhaust, stock air box. Good for 96mph in heavy wet snow at 45deg f. If you are not getting that you have too much weight.simple fix. Leave secondary at 6-1.

Looks like 4 heel 3 tip with o-ring. So both sides are not same.Sorry about that. My Eyesight isnt as good as used to be!

i have one on the heel and there is a large black peice on the other side.
no other weights on it at all.
if i was near the sled i would attach a pic.

I had 1-7 gram weight a 3 washers in the heel and 1 washer at the tip(one side). That was how Allen set me up for my weight and riding style but still hitting Rev limiter at the start. Top end was fine. So I removed the washers in the heel and added another 7- gram weight figuring that would help but I guess with the new secondary spring it through everything off. I'll go back to the original set up first and start from there. Now if only the snow would come back.

That is the Tungsten Carbide weight I would think. I got rid of that one. My weights are the 50Y weights.
