Clutching- Secondary and Belt issues

Lately I have been trying to figure out my low power/ fuel mileage issues with my 03 shorty. After cleaning the carbs, changing needle settings, and aligning my track and changing the tension finally I have seen some good gains in performance. I basically now have three questions:

1. Now what I am noticing is that when I start from a standstill and nail it, I dont go anywhere for a second (the rpms go up but the track doesnt spin) this leads me to believe the belt is slipping. Is this correct? It takes a minute for the track to spin so I think it must be the belt.

2. Another thing I noticed is that the belt is hitting the bottom of the aluminum gaud cover at some point because you can see where it has actually let scuff marks. I dont think this is normal, is it? Could the belt be too big? (the numbers are worn off of it)

3. Top end only pulls about 9600 rpm. I think this could also be because of the belt slipping or being too big. If not, and I want to change the secondary spring tension do I have to take the secondary off? Is that vey difficult? There doesnt seem to be any way to adjust the ride height of the belt like on my Polaris is that right?

When I go riding this weekend the first thing Im gunna do is change the belt and see what difference that makes. I am sure it will make some difference, but if it doesnt make everything better I want to know what I can do do adjust it. Please let me know what you all thing. Thanks for any info. :D

1: It is likely your belt is slipping
2: It is normal to get some belt marks on the bottom of the belt guard. It is not normal to have all the markings worn off the belt.
3: It is very easy to rwmove the secondary. Take a 14mm wrench and loosen the center bolt on the shaft in the center of the sec. clutch and remove the bolt and then the clutch. Remove the belt first. With the clutch back up you will see three bolts, probably with washers under them. These take a 8mm wrench or socket. By removing the washers, the little bolt sits further in allowing the secondary clutch to open and the belt to dropin the clutch a little. By adding a washer or thicker washer the bolt won't go in as far and the belt will sit higher in the secondary clutch. This reduces belt deflection and makes the belt tighter in the clutches at idle and engagement. Too tight and you will get creep and possibly a squeal. I remove the bolts and use Artic Cat washers in the center of the clutch. They come in various thicknesses and in my opinion give you a little more precise tuning.
I would definitely get a new belt and go from there.
Set your secondary setting at 6-1 or 6-2. A tighter secondary will help with belt slipping.

Thanks for the reply. I will try the new belt and then go from there. Now it seems like I have a few good options with the seconday and belt. Thanks again!

I took mine in for warranty on the secondary. They told me that the spring was 7mm off. I imagine they mean its too short when its expanded. What happened is my secondary was sometimes not closing all the way and when I'd give it the gas the belt would squeal. I'll try the new spring and see if its cured.

I have an 04 shorty, that has also put black marks on my belt shield. I have also had several instances where the belt stays down in the secondary and won't ride up on top. Yamaha dealer said they found nothing wrong. I actually had a belt go for a sh*# with only 350km on it. I had a friend order me the white warrior spring that I am going to try on it and see how that works. That was the advice from some of the guys on this forum. :p

Thanks for the replies guys. Did either of you try to adjust the secondary twist to put more pressure on the belt? If so did it make a difference? Im also wondering if the next size shorter belt would make a difference?

I took the factory secondary spring with the pink line on it and changed the spring location from 3-3 to 6-2. Gives more lower end torque and easier engagement. I like this setting. Bender performance has a secondary spring for the RX1 shorty that they say works better than the white warrior spring, and the cost is 15.00 u.s dollars. I have told them to order me the spring and I will try it out, after all it's only 15 bucks.
