Bad day at the testing track. Was dialing in a new setup from hauck compared to my drag n fly and the old ripsaw let a stud hang loose and ripped a nice hole in my front radiator. Thinking of getting a cobra track how do these compare to the ripsaw. My final testing was almost complete when it happened. The Hauck setup is very fast. Will post results versus drag n fly at a later date. I will say it did beat my best drag n fly setup. Thanks any info helpful.

The cobra is way better than the ripsaw. imo, I installed one last year on mine and really like it, hooks way better than the rip, in everything except really good hard pack. If you stud I would use the same stud for the 1.25 track, the 1.450 rub on the bracket under the muffler.

Exactly what I'd say too. I love my Cobra.

I would recommend a Predator. Great hook-up without the loss in top end that comes with a Cobra. Been there, done that! JMHO

Don't think there is such an animal as a 144" Predator anymore...

I just returned from a two day ride in Grand Marais MI. I changed the rip saw to a cobra this summer, so this was my maiden voyage with the new meat.
I did not add any studs to this new track, but the rip saw had 144 in the middle.
In deep trail snow, say 4 inshes or so, (good base below it) I was able to hit 105 very easy on the speedo. I think that this cobra is not giving up any top speed. It was still pulling and I'm sure it would have topped out at 115 just like the old track.
On sundey, we woke up to 1.5 feet of new snow, and I can say that the cobra is way better than the rip saw in loose snow. As far as hard pack, so far, I am not missing my studs and probably won't stud it at all.
I got off the trail once in snow above the hood, and from a dead stop was able to pop it out of the hole with authority. I really like this track! I should also point out though, that I did a small stretch to 128. It means there is anly one more row of lugs in the snow, but it has to add something.

My general gut feeling is the Cobra won't hurt your top end as bad on a 4 stroke as much as a 2 stroke, better torque curve. I recently rode a 2006 Apex that had one and I had no problem going over 100MPH on the dream o meter.
I still own my 2002 Viper and it has almost 8000 miles on it. I ran the stock track the first season. The 2nd year I put on a Predator 1.25" Very good all around track and very respectable top speed. With about a bit over 5000 miles I switched to a Cobra (not fully clipped version). I had a buddy put it on and also re-ring the sled at the same time. The first thing I noticed was track ratcheting once in awhile so I kept on tightening it up. Also I noticed a drastic top speed loss......like 7-10MPH. I was a bit perplexed because I was getting out to the end of my track adjustment. The last ride I took with it I had severe ratcheting. All along I had been researching different tracks and heard good reports on the Ice Ripper so I bought one on ebay. The next day I discovered I had a broken W arm in the rear skid.
Now what to do?? I ended up selling the Cobra and putting on the Ice Ripper after I fixed the W arm of course. I figured I would see better top end again, but it wasn't much more. Here I find I am down 20lbs. on compression. I recently tore it apart and and I had major ring blow by.......poor ring seal. I just got it back toegther and installed another Cobra fully clipped. I will post my thoughts this winter. I didn't like the Ice Ripper in loose snow at all. It's nothing but a Ripsaw with little nub studs and I really didn't see much improvement in icy corners.
The last Cobra I had really hooked up well in the sugar snow like you see in the UP of Michigan. The problem you may run into like I did was getting the proper skis for cornering. I run SLP Powder Pros right now and I like them alot over the RX-1 skis I ran before that.
just my 2 cents

The cobra hooks up great, but I don't like giving up any top end speed. After talking to others on this forum the feeling is a 2-3 mph loss on top end, maybe a bit more.

I never noticed a top speed loss on the switch from the predator to the cobra but there are SO many mods on the sled its hard to say something else didn't make it up. I need to just change one thing at a time LOL

I seen these posts too, but I definately gained top end with my cobra, im even running more studs too?
I tried figuring it out, and I think its because the rubber is much softer, and I dont think that the cobra "flicks" the snow out the back of the track the way the ripsaw does.
So far, my biggest advantage of this track is deep snow capability which is startling, and the durability. No studs pulled through or ripped lugs this will be the third season on this track.
That flicking action might actually detract from the efficiency of the track. With my extros, studs and cobra, I hit 120mph GPS ice/hardpack anyday

Cobra did not affect my top end, I just have more hook up, I did notice that my side slide around coners is gone compared to the Ripsaw.

Yep, that first Cobra I had it dug in so hard on the corners that it wanted to body roll. By switching to the SLP skis it handled much better. I was originally going to go with Slydogs but I got a smoking good deal on the SLP Powder Pros and I can't say enough good about them.

I'd say my Cobra did definitely cause me to lose a little bit on top. 1-2MPH sounds about right. I've got 3 buddies who all have Apex's with stock Ripsaw tracks. I kill them all out of the hole, but in a long race, they slowly reel me back in.
My 75 HP shot of nitrous should solve the top end issue this year.
