check your connections. Not sure what is the same on the apex and Phazer as far as electric ect. This problem was causing more than just 81 to flash.
Might want to post in the Phazer section

From the Yamaheater site:
Possible Code 81: (Handwarmers disconnected)
There can be a few causes of this. The first 2 are most common.
1) A loose connection. "Tug Test" all connections into the connectors, make sure they are solid.
2) Low Idle/Low Battery Voltage Makes sure WARM idle is 1300-1400 RPM (See owners manual)
3) The Power Control Relay contacts have to "break-in" This will disappear after riding for a while.
4) Normal G-forces from riding. Random & generally rare.
5) AutoWarm mode is used with SLEDSTART remote start. This is normal to protect your ECU. Restart to clear.
6) The unit itself could have failed, we don't see many of these, yet it IS possible. Return for replacement after calling.
Code 81 is a Minor error code on your sled, it indicates a possible problem with your handwarmers.
It has no effect on your sled other than turning your grips off.
Your YamaHeater will default to High Heat mode if this should occur so you still have warm grips.
The code is easily cleared by shutting off your sled & re-starting.
Trickle charge your battery overnight, most times issue will resolve itself.

Ummmm...
Ask Rock maybe?
lol
You are fortunate to have great help and support available to you almost at a moments notice.
Have sent you a PM with my number.
Can call me anytime.
FYI for everyone:
We also ran into a couple sleds with the ground connector corroding issue.
Suggest finding the connector now BEFORE it fails and coating it with dielectric grease.
This will help prevent further corrosion.
We also changed how the YamaHeaters are grounded so they drain no handwarmer current through this connection & only through their own ground wire.
(The factory set-up uses this connection for handwarmer ground current among others.)

Black Knight, thanks for the pics. This is an older thread, but I'm dealing with a code 81 on one of my Phazers (07 Mountain Lite), and thinking this could help me. What did you do in your case? Replace that connection block? Also I can't quite tell where that is on the sled, did you remove the air filter and that's looking into the front?here some pic doc 10 i'm pointing to the problem block with screw driver
Had to remove a little tape to get to it.doc 11 i'm popping out the grounding
pin that connects them altogether. was lots of arcing on the two pins farthest away from the tip of the screwdriver and the plastic holding block was black/melted on that side.
I also had my fuel pump fail, about the same time as the code 81 was showing up. With the code 81 flashing last time I rode my machine, it would clear or go away after stopping then restarting throughout the day. But next time I was about to go out the machine died and I haven't heard the fuel pump prime since. So I may have dual problems, but finally isolated the fuel pump yesterday and pretty sure it needs to be replaced. So I'm hoping to find one today. However I'm also trying to isolate the cause of that code 81. I unplugged several wiring clips yesterday, chasing down from left side handlebar and bar warmer switch, added dielectric grease to all and replugged, but still the code 81 flashing. Not sure if maybe once I replace fuel pump and the machine runs again, maybe the code 81 will clear?
Appreciate any input!
