14 viper XTX SE
Morning guys. I see there has been a lot of talk again on the hot/cold start issues after the Factory remap was released. Figured I'd give you guys an update on how mine has performed thus far. I'll start with a little background info as each and every viper seems to have a mind of its own...

I purchased my 14 MY XTX brand new in august of 2014. Right off the bat i began modding it, It received a custom wrap, an OSP stainless racing can, and NOS-PRO's clutching on the cheap setup with an 8-DN belt. After doing some pre season testing with it (no snow) the engine oil was drained, and replaced with Ams oil 0-W40 full synthetic, along with the chaincase oil also replaced with Ams full syn.

When we finally got snow, I began paying extra attention to it's starting behaviours as I was aware of most peoples trouble from posts on this forum. From day one my viper has started flawlessly weather warm or cold. When the updated mapping of the ECU was released, I had it done simply to be update with the times. In my opinion I didn't need it at all, but figured it couldn't hurt anything. For the last 3 days here in regina, it has been anywhere from -30C to -45C. I left my viper outside purposely to test its limits in the cold. It has started perfectly regardless of which method i use. When i cycle the ignition, let the gauges do their thing, wait for the fuel pump to prime, then crank it, it fires right up. It will high idle for a few moments then settles down to a nice 1480 and is ready to go. If I crank it over immediately and don't let anything cycle, it takes a second or two to get any sort of reaction from the ignition, but it still fires right up. Same thing with hot starts, no issues. I will say this.... I run nothing but Shell 91 Octane premium non ethanol fuel with 0 additives or treatment added. Also, wether its my diesel truck, the viper, or my race quad, I never let either get below 1/4 of a tank without refuelling ( just a good habit) I believe Yamaha has a phenomenal design when it comes to their engines and more specifically their EFI setups and electronics. My 2011 YFZ450R is a complete work of art and the stock fuel system is capable of supporting phenomenal amounts of power without failure. It is a shame that we don't get Yamaha's innovation in the fuel world with these newly designed vipers but instead have to deal with Cat's setup. On my YFZ, I always let the fuel pump cycle before starting, and it starts hard and quick with all kinds of punch. I believe cat has a flaw in this system, as it just isn't displaying starting characteristics of a typical Yamaha system. I hope from what I've stated above, that maybe some of you experiencing starting issues can acquire a few tips on how to start you viper with better results. Seems as if each of us kind of has to develop their own starting techniques. Western Canada is a pretty good testing ground for this.... it's just down right freezing here right now.... cheers guys and ride safe,
Ashton

i was going to try that for the hell of it but can never be bothered. haha never any probs starting mine either. If i update mine it will mess with my custom mapping
cal perhaps the goons in TRF set the vipers destined for Canada up a little differently knowing that 8 months of the year its colder then a witches titty out here :dunno:...... I mean they do think we live in igloos and all lmao!

Yamaha informed me that the reflash had nothing to do with cold starts, the reflash was for the hot start issue.

When you say yamaha i would assume you mean your dealer or dealer rep.
Im not looking to argue with you but if you follow yellowknife's posts, he has been working hand in hand with his dealer and yamaha on the cold start issue and his videos show an obvious improvment in the cold starting issues after the remap was performed.

It would be virtually impossible for the remapping of the ECU to solve the hot start issue without having some sort of effect on the cold start issue......

There is also some solid proof of the viper starting much better both hot AND cold after the re map...... there are also some who notice no change what so ever after the remap...... either way there has been SOME proof of an improvement on hot/cold starting after the remap. This cannot be argued
