Coolant leak?

Went out the the garage tonite and noticed that my coolant level was low. 1/4 inch above the low mark on the reservior. I asked a friend and he said that 4 strokes will blow off extra coolant and level off. I did a search here but didn't find an answer to my liking.

So, is it normal for a nytro to blow off and show low coolant levels, or is there an actual leak? Still feeling alittle uneasy about riding with low coolant levels.

I told my buddy that I bought a yammie so I wouldn't have to worry about carrying oil. Now it could be coolant. LOL!

Mine was low this year topped it up. I own an 08. I don't know why mine was low, no visible signs of a leak. Maybe someone can explain it.
 
You may want to check the cap on your coolant reservoir. The cap on mine popped off once this season and all the coolant splashed out of it during the ride - but the radiator remained full.

While you're at it, pull the side panels off and look for obvious leaks. If your XTX has an extra under-tunnel heat exchanger there's a procedure to bleed the air from the system, otherwise you can just top off the levels in the radiator and reservoir with coolant and go.
 
If you do a lot of rough trail riding, there is a chance that you are losing coolant out of the reservoir up front. The coolant is splashing around inside the reservoir and a small amount eventually finds the way out through the cap and the following hose. At least, that is what happened on my 2008 RTX 40th. Check your left side A-arms and shock, that is where the escaping coolant eventually ends up...
If this is the problem you are having, it can be solved, or at least improved...The inside of the reservoir cap is empty. Most other models and brands have actually got a short piece of hose reaching down from the cap into the coolant. I installed a similar piece of hose (there is already a short boss where it can be attached...), just long enough to reach down below the surface of the coolant. This seems to help very much.
Also, I have heard about others with the same problem that claim improvements from just re-routing the existing hose.
 
are you checking you coolant whne the sled is warm or cold? the coolant will go up when the sled is hot and down when its cold because it expands when hot. there is a huge temp diff for going from in the - temps cold to 200 hot so its expands allot. i always let me sled warm up good then check the coolant.
 
RR, I wouldn't be too concerned at this point.

When I picked up my sled last year I was concerned that there was none to very little fluid in my reservoir. My service tech said that was normal. However after my preseason service this year I noticed he had topped it up to where it is visible in the bottle now.
 
Although mine is not an fx nytro, it doesn't like any coolant in the reservoir as well. If I top the reservoir up to the cold line, within the first 10-20 kms, it spits it out the overflow until there is virtually no visible coolant in the tank. I'm going to check for air in the system but for the past 2 seasons I have not encountered any problems.
 
1/4" above the cold fill line isn't low in my book.

Both my XTXs started life with coolant visible to the cold fill line in the coolant window. After a couple of rides both showed zero coolant in the windows. The overflow tanks were empty but the radiators were still full. After topping the overflow tank levels back to the low line they've been stable so far. I figured new machines must still have some air in the systems.
