My brother and I started getting our sleds ready for the season and when we went to check the belt for life, we found this on the cluthes (07 attak and my 09 xtx) We have an enclosed trailer that they live in during the winter up north, and in a heated shop when back home. The corrosion feels rough, but you can wipe it off. I hope I can take hot water and maybe soap and scrub them down. It looks like salt damage, but I'm still trying to wonder where it all came from. Do you think the clutches are toast?

Would brake cleaner do the same thing? We buy that stuff by the case.

As mentioned totally normal. I think it's partially due to the amount of moisture that ends up in these sleds. Ever pull your hood off after a full day of riding. Worse yet, take a look after they've been in the trailer and the temps rise. At the end of the season I try to clean everything, dry it out, then I spray a silicone spray on everything but the clutch surfaces. Then at the start of the season I hit the clutch surfaces with a scothbrite pad.

Many products of that nature will leave a film of oil on the clutch face.
The only (oil free) one I have found is Honda Brake Cleaner.

I use brake cleaner and with a rag it would not come off. I tried using a 400 grit emery cloth and while it did take the corrosion off, you can see surface scratches in the light. I think I may have gone too coarse. I'm going to try maybe 1000 grit emery cloth tomorrow

Then it will contaminate your belt and constantly be sanding your clutch faces.
What I have done in the past is lightly coat said parts with a light coat of pentrating oil, spray some on a rag and wipe the outside parts of the clutch.
I have also done this to the faces and then use brake cleaner in the fall to remove, then give them a light scuff with a brillo pad then wipe down with rubbing alcohol or more brake cleaner on a rag.
Been doing this for years without issue.

Do like I do when the wife is gone put the cluches in the dishwasher they come out nice and clean. As far as the scraches on the inside of the clutches your fine it will help with grip on the belt just dont any lower on the grit.

I should have been more specific, by 'it' i meant wash the belt with mild soap not the clutches.
All my clutches so far look great.

^^^Wow, very clean XLT! I'm not the only "clean freak" i see.
I use to clean all my customers sleds up nice before they picked them up, and there was some nasty ones! They'd be all thrilled, then load it on their trailer and drive off with no cover, doh!

Re: clutch
No, we only have fully enclosed trailers. They sit in the trailers up north all winter, then all summer they sit in either the trailer or the garage.
On the secondary helix there looks to be some ruff spots, should I take some 400 grit to those as well?
I've never taken a clutch apart.. how much pressure are these things under? Do I need any special tools aside from a primary puller?
