I have an 07 Apex RTX with 2700mi. I was installing the belt over the weekend and noticed a number of small cracks at the base of the sheaves. Had I not had the "quick belt change" tool that spreads the sheaves for easy belt installation, I would have never noticed them. Anyone else have the secondary crack? I have only heard of the primaries cracking. I have to bring the unit to my dealer for inspection and hope it is covered under YES.

Time for some clutch work.... ;)!

I saw pitting on the upper portions, nothing major. These seem to random and near the base of the stationary sheave. Some are larger than others.

Would like to have them looked at before finding out the hard way. Thanks for the reply

I have discarted my original (2005 RS venture) at approx KM 15000.
One of the crack made it to the center. Did'nt want to wait 'n see how far or if it stops.

Typically these are just casting marks. Can you send us a picture? or, ... you can do aa search and find some pictures already posted to compare your's too. Try searching on "casting marks"

I will take some pictures and upload them. One of my riding buddies is stopping over tomorrow. He has a 2002 SRX with 8k mi. He has some cracks as well. Mabe just casting marks as suggested. I will wait for the second opinion. Should would suck to loose the clutch at 100mph #$%&*

Never ever ever seen an actual cracked secondary. those are casting marks. Just keep using it. They look scary but it,s nothing.

Actually, I have seen the Yamaha secondaries crack under the sliders, to the point that the slider falls out and it has no support. I also had an Arctic Cat primary clutch fly apart in 1974. It did not even have any casting marks. The movable sheave cracked and about 1/3 of the sheave went out through the back of the hood.

While the likelihood of there actually being a serious crack is low, a second opinion versus assuming it is good is excellent idea.

My bud blew me off tonight. He'll be by tomorrow. We will open the secondary and discuss the casting marks/ cracks over a couple of beers.
Turk and Len after some research I think you guys are correct in that they are casting marks.

I have not had the best of luck with previous sleds blowing apart 50mi from no where. Maybe a bit cautious Thank you for the replies as they are always helpful :rocks:

yamahatd... Glad that your now in peace with your secondary.
Here is couple of pics of the one that i don't like.
This is the same crack at adjacent view... (comments welcome)

Now here is one that bears closer inspection. I wish I had that one in my hands. Do you have access to someone who can magnaflux it?

What do you think Turk?

???magnaflux it???... What the heck is it... probably welding check equipment right ?
I can always attempt better shots if need be. Yeap... it looks bad.

Sure does look like a die crack. Better pics! Spot Check may be more readily available. Magnaflux is a system used to find cracks in ferrous or non ferrous material. Spot Check is a three part system to do pretty much the same thing as Magnaflux for all intensive purposes but, at a cheaper price.

The cracks/casting marks on my secondary are not even remotely close to thos pictured. Wow... that crack would definitely get my attention. #$%&*

I have 4 secondary clutches on my bench I use for testing. 2 of em look as bad as that & I use em on my big hp turbo RX-1.
