It's not the first time I've seen a flywheel Woodruff key shear on the crank but it is the first time I've seen this on a Yamaha 4 stroke. If you pull the coils on these sleds make sure the wires are put back on correctly when they are reinstalled. If the coils fire out of order it can cause a serious kick back resulting in damaged starter gears, jumped valve timing and a sheared crankshaft key.
A 2008 Vector was brought to me for repairs after the coil wires were improperly installed. Thinking the chain might have jumped time on the cam gears I tore it down to reset the chain but also discovered that the stator timing marks didn't correspond to TDC on #3 cylinder. Ignition timing was reset with a new Woodruff key and the starter idler gear replaced. Luckily it didn't jump valve timing and cause severe damage to the valves and pistons.
