I got a free track today but it has closed windows. My question is can I cut open the closed windows and add clips to it.
cutting open track windows and adding clips
Yes, you can. Or just cut the windows open and leave the clips off. Either way has about the same effect. Be very careful cutting the opening to make sure the corner of the cut does not go beyond the perpendicular cut. A stray cut could lead to a rip down the line. A carpet knife with a few new blades works great.......a little time consuming, but it works.
The best way would be to make a punch with a sharpened edge and use a press or a block of wood on the opposite site and punch it out, thus leaving no stray cuts that could lead to track failure.......
Free tracks are always great tracks.....

Yes, I actually find myself in "Shevegas" quite often as I work at Kohler...
Do you do a lot of local riding? When the snow is good, the local trails can be great fun...but the window of opportunity for good riding seems to shrinking every year.
What kind of track did you score for free?

use a 1/1/8 hole saw and drill it out. fast and easy, dont worry about the clips, not needed.

I ride here a lot when the trails are open. And if they are closed I run the marsh or go up to the UP. The track came off a ski-doo that my buddy hit a tree with. Lol

Would it still be ok with out the clips because I run no slip drives.

that i dont know. you will want to check driver tooth fitment into the holes to see if there is clearence. others on this site have cut the holes out square and run extroverts without the extra clips.APEX 06 said:grader said:use a 1/1/8 hole saw and drill it out. fast and easy, dont worry about the clips, not needed.

I cut and clipped my track, the only issue I had if the hole is not cut back enough under the clip, the clip cracked when crimed tight. After 3000 kms, no other clips cracked .If the clip is tight and does not crack when crimped, then your good to go.

Dip the blade of the mat knife in a little oil to make it cut easier. I push in at the corner and work toward the center of the hole, that way you don't over cut past the hole. I just used the cap of an oil bottle to hold my dipping oil when I cut and clipped my track.
