if for some reason it turns out that your charging system is out...don't buy a new stator! i've got a good one out of a parts motor with 56 miles on it. the sled threw a rod and i'm parting it out. i'll save you some coin and sell it to you!

I doubt its the battery. Your sled will actually run (after starting of course) with NO battery. The battery is for starting, after that your charging system supplies power to run the ignition, lights, etc.
Like others have said...use a voltmeter to test the charging system and battery. With the engine off, the battery should be around 12.6 volts (when fully charged). If its very low, like around 9 volts, you may have a bad cell in the battery. If the battery is at proper voltage after charging it, start the engine and check the voltage. It should be around 14 volts. If its still around 12.6 volts, your charging system is weak. If its down to around 10 volts, then the charging system isn't working at all, and the battery is being drained by the sled's electronics. When my stator went bad, even my brand new battery was only reading around 10-11 volts with the engine running.

Exactly if the charging system is working the sled will not die it will run on the charging system alone. It is the charging it is not working.

so back to the voltage regulator? less than 800 miles.. could the stator go bad that soon??? i thought these sleds were suppose to be reliable as all heck..

I wonder if you can check this like a car? Charge the battery good then start the sled, then pull the positve lead off the battery. If it dies the charging system is bad. If it's like a car once started the charging system runs the car not the battery????

Hate to burst you bubble people but a RX-1 will not run without propper battery voltage period. It has been tried and It dosent happen even if the battery is weak it will not run the ignition system. I will prolly make spark with less voltage but the coil winding on the main power relays needs 11 volts minimum to stay energised any less and first the accessories go then the headlamp then the ignition dies. Bottom line is get a new fully charged battery.

The first thing he should buy is a voltmeter, then test battery not running & running, around 12 v not, 14 v running, DO NOT TROUBLE SHOOT WITH PARTS, you will waste money!
I would look at all your grounds. Look up front on the volt reg there is a few there.

I will have to test mine. I cant see why it wont run once it is started and the positive is taken off.

It may run but not for long I had this problem last year. Charged battery a few times each time it wouldnt make it 10 minutes then die. I replaced the battery and havent had a problem since.

I'm not saying you're wrong here, because the RX-1 COULD be different from the Vector, but I am telling you for certain that a Vector will NOT run with a dead battery or no battery at all. It's a fact. Check out this thread from last year. I started it and there are some interesting replies...

Sounds like it may be the stater . Was one on here that the stater was all chewed up . votage meter will tell you if the system is working . Stater should put out close to 80 volts on each of the three leads but it is ac power .

i dont think its the stator.. because when i put the sled away last year it ran like a champ. i stored the sled all summer in my garage w/ no charger on the battery... but would start it up occasionally and run it till it would get up to operating temps.. i havnt put any miles on it since putting it away last year... so im hoping it just a low battery... hopefully i can get a full charge out of it and take care of the problem..
