I'm new to the site and new to 4 strokes. I had a 98 SRX700, and GF was on a 02 poo XC800. Wanted something with more suspension, and got a great deal on a 07 Apex Mtn. (1200 miles), and a 06 RS Vector Mtn (1100 miles). So have yet to take them out, doing maintenance, as previous owners did nothing in years. I've changed oil, gas, gear case, and lubed zerks. I ride mostly groomed trails with a little in the powder. My question is did I go overboard getting a 162" for just riding on trails? Is the Apex THAT heavy that I'm going to be wishing I was back on my beloved SRX? The Apex has Fox Floats and Excel exhaust, sounds just like an R1 MC. I love the fit and finish of Yamaha's, and you can't beat the reliability

Well it's not ideal for trail riding but it can be done. I think you might find it a bit tippy in the corners with the narrower front end (39 vs 42) but the 16in wide track might negate some of that anyway. Also all that track behind you will definitively want to push the front in corners on the trail.
I would really keep an eye on your hyfax especially in low snow conditions. The trail versions are bad enough but with that big track with those lugs on it I would definitely watch it.
So in short coming off an SRX which I owned this thing will be a workout and the monster track will not help matters on the trail. On a positive you will never be at a loss for traction and you are set big time for off trail stuff no worries there. Try it and if you hate it there a re a lot of mountain guys that will snatch it up.

X2, it will work you over. You will just learn to ride it different the the 700. To help with the push you could cut the lugs down to 1.5" with a hot knife I had to do this to my 08MTX. Put a set of ice scratchers on the skis this will help big time with the help hifax.

get some ice scratchers (good flexible ones) and some aggressive dually carbides to get that big track to follow through in the turns.

The ride over the o'l SRX is u huge difference!!! As for trail riding with that long of a track, all depends on how twisty your trails are, lots of tight corners, you will be fighting it, moderate corners/straight aways should be good.....tend to go off the trail..... priceless!!!!!!

Do some preventative maintenance.
Grease the drive shaft and jackshaft bearings on the clutch side. Easy to do, pull the rubber seals and re-grease.
