Could you have gotten some moisture in there?

I'm thinking that after looking at it I seen the top shaft had some rust on it thinking the seal is bad.

If it's grey then definitely water/moisture somehow got in there.
Probably a good thing you were running Mobil synthetic too.
I recently changed mine out to Amsoil Marine gear lube, it states it performs with up to 10% water infiltration?
I had some left over from my last outboard and figured if guy's run ATF or regular engine oil in their chain cases then this has to be at least as good as those?

Ya on the top shaft with the small gear the oil on it was a rust color. Thinking that seal is bad. Going to take some pics then post them.

I'd definitely change the bearings too while you have it apart. Cheap insurance aginst worn or broken shaft(s).

i have 10000 on the RTX... but... i've done this once already.. surprizingly i had the chaincase cover gasket weep on me as well as rear seal... lost most of the chaincase fluid and on one of our many "long" straight stretches at 100mph had the chaincse come apart.. hard!.. got so hot that the chain welded the links together... turned the gears blue/purple... so it was bad... rebuilt it a year ago, but have noticed that the fluid level is misteriously dropping.. so i suspect its weeping past the rear bottom seal.Irv said:sherlock29 said:I have to do this to mine also!
