Ditch Banging a Phazer?

damnit cannon! You've got me reconsidering even with yet another pure crap snow season.

Time to research more. If I end up getting one, and the wife doesnt buy the idea that it was for her, Im gonna send her your way and tell her it was all your idea!

the cold start fix is essential...otherwise have a hair dryer and a long extension cord ready to play block heater an hour before you go out...

im sure a search would informt me, but Im lazy and I've already hijacked the hell outta this thread.... what all is entailed in the cold start fix?

I have the cold start bulletin from Yamaha. Its too big to attach. PM me your email and I will send it to you.

Symptom: Some affected units have experi-enced hard starting in temperatures below -15ºF (-26ºC).
Cause: Reduced engine cranking speed in extremely cold temperatures affects the engine decompression and ECU calibration. This can reduce the engine starting performance.
Remedy:Install ECU kit, which includes a new ECU, two decompression springs, and a cylinder head cover gasket.

If someone is selling a good used 2007, check to see if they ponied up for the 5 year YES contract. In the first 5 years, they should have encountered most of the issues. The YES should have gotten most of them taken care of, mine did.

I have seen plenty of 2007 units that just went off warranty. If the VIN is looked up at the dealership, it will show what was done under warranty. Mine is fully documented, and if I sold it, I doubt I would get much more than anyone else is asking. But I have no reason to sell it, it's too damn much fun!

If I had not had YES when my skid took a crap, I would have had to invest roughtly $200 for the skid beef up kit. I'm not sure what they call it, but it was a racing kit of some sort. The arm up front was cracked to due to the link bailing, so there may be some welding to fix and reinforce that arm.

Otherwise like said before, the engine is rock solid. The only thing I worry about with mine, now off warranty, is the starter. Mine is fine, but it's maybe only a matter of time. The skis are still stock, but I have updated wear bars that improve it quite a bit without blowing cash on skis. As I mentioned before, the Freeride track is a must have. If only to blast past other phazers spinning in the drifts. I walk all over my buddy with an identical sled with stock track.

Before you buy, drive one, drive one, drive one. It's truly a love it or hate it sort of ride.

Thanks Cubby! I sent ya a PM with my email addy. That cold start update sounds expensive and a PITA to do?

thats good info biff. Wasnt the YES normally a 2 yr deal? I havent ever purchased a brand new machine from yamaha, except for a 04 kodiak back in the day, and I thought it was a 2 year deal?

I dont have an opportunity to ride one. I dont know anyone with one, and have only seen a phazer once on the trails around here two years ago, and I havent seen it since. Something tells me I'd like it. I have the apex for exactly the conditions you described and I love it. However, I'd love to have something like a phazer for ditch banging and playing around on as well as a backup sled for me and/or friends/family.

Im trying to get the wife to try out snowmobiling, but she is reluctant. She was also reluctant to try an ATV, and she ending up being very upset when I sold my grizzly, she loved the thing and was the first one to blast into the mud holes or rip down the trail at speeds that made me worry for her! I know she would like sledding if she had an experience other than the 74 yamaha 340 she rode around the swaps on when she was a kid! I know the phazer might not be the best first sled for her, but neither is the Apex!

Im starting to become obsessed. I spent at least 3 hours last night watching youtube videos of phazers!

Yamaha has been pretty good to those that purchased first year out models, and even better to those that pre-ordered them.

In spring 2006, when the Phazer was introduced, they took our pre-orders for a bit less than list price. They threw in $300-$500 in accessories and a 3-year YES contract. At that same time, you could extend it to a full 5 years for something stupid like $250-$300. It was a no-brainer for those of us that had no way of test-riding or knowing about what issues may come with such a huge change in the line-up.

Sometimes they use that as an incentive in the spring as well. To move older stock they will discount the YES contracts for 3 or 5 year add-ons. I have no issues with the YES contract knowing that it would not take much to rack up a $250-$300 tab at the dealer.

Those warranties are transferrable as well. The 2007 Apex I bought fall of 2011 from a TY member was still under warranty till the following spring! That was a huge selling point. Who gets a warranty on Craigslist or TY classifieds? Yamaha owners do, that's who. A spring purchased 2008 Phazer could still be under warranty.

Good luck with your search, cuz we know you been scoping Craigslist since this thread got off track! HA!!

The funny part is when you start a phazer, it will sound just like an ATV! Pup, pup, pup, pup, pup, and it will spool up to redline fast. It may feel tippy for a new rider, so start them on flat ground. Or start them on your Apex. If she rode the ATV aggressively and got her butt off the seat once in a while, then the Phazer will be no issue. It likes body english.

i've had a saved RSS feed of craigslist for a phazer since last year, but i disabled it at the beginning of the season. I think it might be time to turn it back on.

She knew how to ride the grizz like no ones business, and he has a Kawi Ninja 500 street bike (a 500 twin 4 stroke as well), so she gets the idea of leaning into corners and all that. Hell, her first real street bike ride after getting her endorsement was the blackhills on some crazy hairpins, and she was right there with us the whole time!

now to find the right deal, and make sure she doesnt want to sign divorce papers instead of loan papers if I do!

^^^ nytro engine swap time. That one has been for sale for over a year. Would love to have the time for that project.

Mine does not have the cold start update and has always started so not all need it.
