I put a set of 8" Woody's Dooley's on this season, and I've heard alot about shimming the skis also. What is involved in the shimming process, and why would I want/ need to do it?
Someone on another pots said earlier that my mileage will suffer withthe Dooley's - any feedback on this?
I thought about putting this in the skis forum, but I want feedback from Apex owners....I don't think I have darting issues, but with all the other mods I've done, the track spins so much, I'll know more when I'm done studding.
Thanks for the info.

It eliminates even more of the darting. That is how I set all of mine up. 8" doolys and ski shims. Just superglue a piece of rubber belting .250 thick or so under the back bottom of rubber ski bumper.

Are you trying to reduce the pressure on the front of the skis? I have some rubber belting, but I'm assuming this would be a piece that is approx. 2.5" by 1'5", and can be put on whithout taking the skis apart? Am I getting that right?

That is correct, however, I don't think it is that long, you only want it under the heel. If you can lift the front of the ski, just clean the bottom of the rubber with some brake clean and glue on. As for speed loss. Yes, you will get some, but it makes the riding experience sooo much nicer. It is worth giving up unless you are doing speedruns.

I'm not worried about it if that is what is causing my mileage to go down. I only got 78 miles the other night before the light came on!
What will I notice differently if I shim my skis?

Thanks,I wonder if it would work to attach the rubber to the ski bleow the bumper, or to the tip of the rubber bumper using some adhesive for a tire patch?

It sseems that when I shim right and set my sled back down flat on the garage floor, that the front keel of the ski is up a little.
You may not notice too much if you arent darting, but part of darting is conditions, how many ruts hardpacked/iced into the trail is a big factor

For MPG there are some cheap things you can try.
Less preload on your front springs, more weight transfer, ski toe out no more than 1/4 out....to try those things costs nothing.
Then where a fully clipped track is expensive, installing SLP wearpads is only about $24
A slighly oversized bogey wheel like the doos may help. Prolly around $120 to do that
170plus runs a Y-P-Y primary spring... ehhh say $20 or so, that could help.

I purchased new Bergstrom carbides and shims for my simmons. I dont think it rides much different than before. True its been a crappy year and I have not been able to put many miles on it this year.
I had dooleys on OEM skies before the simmons. The stopped the darting but pushed like crazy. The simmons do not dart or push but they steer hard.
