Over the off season I had changed out tracks. I'm guessing I didn't properly tighten the bolt that held the gears to the drive cog shaft. It had backed its self out and wore a hole through the side of the gear case. We were able to fix it by drilling out the damaged threads, tapping the shaft and a new bolt. this time I used thread lock. cleaned the hole and surrounding area, placed tape on the inside of hole and filled it the surrounding area with JB Weld. So If it happens to you, it doesn't have to ruin your trip. FYI get a carbid drill bit to clear the threads as the shaft it very hard steel.

Please elaborate. I am ready to put the gears back in my '07 Apex GT so now would be a good time for me to put in the updated bolt if this applies to my sled.

just put my new "updated" bolt in the other day. same length, the only difference that i could see was that it was threaded all the way. i too put some blue locktite on it as i don't really want it to come through the chaincase as well.

When you say that it is threaded "all the way" do you mean all the way to the head of the bolt?
As you can see in the picture, my bolt only has about 25 mm of thread on the end. Therefore I am assuming that I have the "old" version.
If the thread length is the only difference I question what advantage there is to having threads all the way to the head where they are not needed?

yes, thats what i meant. the only thing that i could see is maybe the unthreaded part of the old bolt binds on the shaft and keeps it from being tightened as much as it should be. i found mine the other day broke off at that point.

Mmmm...... Obviously the bolt needed more threads. However I am curious why they did not just add another 5 or 10 mm of threads rather than threading it all the way to the head which is certainly unnecessary.
In any case I will be buying and installing the updated bolt even though my original bolt stayed tight for 6,000 miles.

I got mine from the hardware store and its the same length and threaded all the way with a collar. Grade 8. I'm going to leave it be, as it seems to have worked. My sled has 15k miles so I wouldn't think its a must replace item. The bolt itself holds the lower gears and shaft together all force is transfered through the splines. Even when the bolt was out I was able to operate the sled.

Had my bolt come this week on the crazy 8's in grand marias mi at speed took out both covers an the gears an chain was not cheap replacement. I will use red loctite this time not blue. 

I used blue loctite stuck a q tip in threads to soak up most of the oil and wipe the threads with a cloth. I also use about 3 or 4 drops.

I would think that spraying some brake or carb cleaner into the threaded hole in the drive shaft would work good to make sure that the loctite adheres properly.
