Goodday to all, on my 6 day trip to the Quebec region last week, my '06 APEX ER let me down. The E.C.U. box fried and completely disabled the sled, warning lights came on with an Error code reading of ERR-1. Checked with the dealer and he relayed that my box was shot!! 1500.00$ to fix!!! Sure glad I bought the 2 year extended warranty! ;)! Anybody else hear of these things frying like that? Any causes?? 3500 miles on it and has been flawless.

:rocks:

Just out of curiosity, how well did your handle bar warmers work? Also, did you have the updated grips or the original grips? Updated grips are a one piece design and the original grips are a two piece design (in case you didn't know).

hopefully it was not a handlebar heat issue....get back to us on ANY MODS you have on the sled whatsoever..including if you used 06 bars and update harness.

I have done ZERO mods on my sled. I do have the updated '07 handlebars, about the only other thing l can think of is that my temp light came on about 10 minutes before the thing #*$&@ the bucket. Personally I think that these engines produce a great deal of heat in a very enclosed place, and it might be that heat that fried the ECU box.... but, that' s just my uneducated guess!

Unlikely a heat issue considering where the ECU is located. Underhood heat isn't a real issue with the exhaust exiting out the back unlike a 2S with the exhaust under the hood. Has the sled been repaired yet? If not just be aware that there are other things that can cause that code...I once plugged in the speed sensor to the wrong spot and got that code (which freaked me out!!)...it may be a good idea to check the wiring harness. Yamaha electronics tend to be bulletproof. I haven't heard of many ECU/CDI failures but obviously there is the odd one.

From the service manual

ERR1 is....
No signal are received from the ECU.
1) inspect connectors...
-Cylinder ID sensor coupler
-Main wiring harness coupler
-Sub-wire harness coupler
2) Open or short in wiring harness...
3) malfunction in meter
4) malfunction in ECU

I'd try another ECU before buying an ECU!!!!

Thanks for the feedback boys, like i said, it`s under warranty so I will let the dealer and Yamaha worry about it. I will let you know what the outcome is!

I have the 08 apex ltx gt 40th with 980 kms. I have a er_1 code as well. I am hoping that is moisture in a connection as i was ridding in very deep snow. Were is the ecu in the nose or dash cluster?
Were do i find the main wiring harness and sub wiring harness? My sled still runs fine but the dash looks like a christmas tree with no speedo or tac.

Someone posted $600 last year for the EC when there was some concern of damaging it due to the handle bar mod. I just called my dealers parts department and it lists for $642.

Dealer said it was worth 840.00$ Canadian dollars, plus about 3 hres. in total to replace, add your taxes and it`s going to be close to 1500.00 CAD.

One of the guys I ride with tells me he is also having intermittent issues recently with the electronics on his 06 Apex ER.

He says he'll be riding along and all of a sudden the gauge will completely light up all of the warning lights and LCD indicators, the tach will swing down to zero, up to 12k+ and then start to work again. Then the gauge flashes all sorts of error codes for a while. After that the engine will shut down for a split second (while riding) and power back on right away with another gauge "power on" cycle. He mentioned something about his trip counters being reset and handlebar heaters reset to off (I think they go off - reset to something anyway). At that point his oil light will remain on and when he checks the oil it usually is on the low side (add mark). I don't think his oil light has ever turned on before going through one of these bizarre cycles first.

He has the 07 handlebars with the updated harness (no RockerDan hot grips fix).

Anyone ever seen or heard of this before? I wonder if a short in the oil level sensor or something could cause this bizarre behaviour.
