Whare is the best place for me to hook up? If someone could please give me specific instructions I would appreicate it - this is my first 4 stroke. Anything I need to worry about? Any side effects?

I would go directly off the battery but I would include a fuseable link in my wiring

That will work..
Just get the accessory plug from the Yamaha catalog. It also doubles as a troubleshooting device to check the chord. With the sled running plug it in at the end that would normally connect to the shield and if the little green LED comes on you have power all the way to the shield. It helped 2 friends last year that had shields frost up... I always carry a spare one... You wouldn't believe what they are worth in the woods!

The one I saw in the 07 Preview catalog has the end for the shield wire already attached.

My buddies had a fair bit of trouble with the Yamaha 12V accessory adaptor last season. Over high miles they found the plugs started to loosen off and work their way out enough to disconnect (green light would go out). On long days the guys were complaining that they had to keep pushing the plugs in over and over to keep their visors clear.
After a while my buddies riding Apex's gave up on the plug and installed a Skidoo visor accessory plug (mounted in the tank cover). Skidoo makes a nice, high quality visor plug that doesn't break and has a rubber cover so ice/water doesn't get in.
I tried a cheaper aftermarket visor accessory plug on my sled and it broke during the season (several times). This season I'm going to follow their lead and install the Skidoo plug...
This also leaves the 12 lighter style plug for accessories (GPS, charging your cell phone, etc.).

On my 04 and 05 rx-1 I hooked mine up to the blue wire with the white stripe under the handle bar foam. I have yet to have any trouble with either sled.

Splice into the blue wire of the headlight switch (left side handlebar). Ground to one of the four bolts on the handlebar riser. I'm with sj on this: KISS.

Maybe we're just unlucky, but I can't recall a single sled that hasn't had trouble with the visor hookup when we've simply spliced in a wire and run it up to the handlbars.
Eventually the wires going to the connector hanging out of the handlebar pad break and there's no more heated visor. This might take 5000 or 10,000+ kms and may not happen in the first season for a particular sled - but it pretty much always happens eventually. My wife's Venture 700 has a broken visor plug right now (installed by the previous owner).
If you go with a high quality connector hard mounted to the sled (yes installed in a drilled hole) the wires on the sled side should never break. If one in the group carries an extra extension wire (from helmet to sled) you've got a quick, reliable replacement available.
On the Apex we spliced (soldered & used liquid electrical tape) into the 12V accessory plug leads and it worked perfectly (so far - ~7000 kms since installation on one Apex).
