I have a question for you who have had your donuts go.
i fired my apex up last friday in the garage, while it was warming up i ran into the house to grab my ins card, when i came out of the house i noticed right away that something was wrong. the sound of the sled wasn't right. i blipped the throttle once and it backfired, straightened out and has been fine since.
at first i thought it was the donuts but now i'm wondering if it was just a fouled plug that cleared up. I rode it 105 miles that day and it ran fine with no odd noises or performance loss.
when your donuts went, was it obvious? Noise and performance?
thanks,
dave

when sled is cold , start it and puth both hands on exhaust to block the flow. If your donuts are bad you should see fumes and hear exhaust sound coming from beneath tank area.

From my experience the first issue seems to be backfiring when you let off of the throttle, typically after a full throttle run but not always. The next thing was a slight "ticking" sound right after start up... which was almost certainly the cracked pipe rattling against itself... and within 8 hours the sound went from ticking to sounding like a chain saw.
As mentioned in the other response, excess emissions from around the steering gate would be another clue.
I'd sacrifice a couple hours of riding and take a look. Much easier on the wallet to buy $40 worth of doughnuts versus one or two pipes!

I was wondering the same thing, as mine sounded louder last week. But sealing the exhaust with a couple of leather gloves almost stalled it and I didn't hear anything from in front of the track...this was lifted up and I could see down...I guess they are ok so far.

i did check blocking off the exhaust and that didn't do anything but almost stall it out, i have the new donuts sitting on the seat of my truck so that's not an issue. I just hate to pull it apart only to find nothing wrong.
it hasn't acted up since so i don't know what to do, ride it until if/when it goes fix them asap or do it now?
i just had to start it today to move it out of the garage so i could bring in my side x side and it ran fine, i let it warm up and then took it for a rip around the house......oh well, oh! i picked up new sparkplugs too, figured i would throw them in if i have to tear it down.
thanks for the responses.

Dave, I had the same thing happen on my RX1 and am wondering as well. It only happened 1 time. I asked my dealer who had just worked on the sled. He chuckled and told me I'd notice it for sure when it went bad. He didn't think mine was bad, of course I'm talking over the phone and he worked on it a week prior.
I'm going to try nb's trick and see what's happening. I hate to tear it down if nothing is wrong, but on the other hand $40 vs $400 for a y pipe is a big difference!

I was told by my dealer that the odd backfire after a prolonged WOT when letting off the flipper to coast is normal I've noticed it on colder days...or when running rail lines with the on WOT & off throttle, rattling sound at start up is your indication of DONUTS failing and the exhaust blocking trick at start-up seems more noticable.

I now have 6500 kms...
I got mine replaced last year at 5000 kms and YAM were suprised to see them fail so quick 'cause we '08 have a extra support at the centre junction where the headers and rear exhaust connect, so I guess it doesn't really improve on durability...

Yes my dealer did, my sled is warrantied for 3yrs so I don't bother doing it myself...hopefully these will last a little longer, I don't mind replacing them once a year as regular preventive maintenance but 5000 kms doesn't seem much kms!

Could also be a head pipe going. My RTX had a cracked one PTO side, and it woud start rough and idle funny for a little while. Then once it warmed up it seemed fine. A little sputter and backfire (light) at decel from a long run, but honestly other than that it would have been tough to tell. I think as the pipe warmed it expanded and lessened the gap between the crack. Just a side note if you start to smell exhaust and or your eye's begin to burn a little it could also be a sign. The exhaust fumes were leaking up around the shroud and getting to my face I guess. There was no doubt about what was causing it.

my symptoms/experience:
backfire after letting off the throttle on long pulls.first noticed at approx 1900mi., gradually became a consistent condition after every repeated long pull throttle on/off sequence.
exhaust got louder and louder, but not all at once. when things like this happen gradually you tend to question yourself on if it is louder or not. any backfire is a sign of something not being right and a signal to get the wrenches out and "see whatsamatta/fix".
best of luck to you.
