Extra engine cooling

I have been bleeding the cooling system as suggest on here with the front of the machine elevated and blipping the throttle with the cap off the resovoir. Yes it was warm the weekend. But when i play in deep snow the front heat exchanger plugs up especaily when riding in smooth terrain. I have had it happen at -27c and 5c The snow and ice dam creates a great reduction in cooling and the machine gets hot. The radiator doesnt have suffiecent capacity to keep it cool by itself. I just hope the new track takes care of my problems.

I was kind of thinking of adding an extra heat exchanger. I have an old one out of a 81 srx i was looking at mounting. Probably do only one on the right side just to make things less complcated with the plumbing. Took the machine for a ride with the free ride track installed, seems alot better at cleaning the heat exchanger. On the weekend i will give it a good test run and tell you how things go.

Thanks 08 Rtx that was an interesting article . At leat there was someone else out there having similiar problems to mine!!

Well what I think is happening to you otter is you are in the powder havin fun but the trigger is probably pulled pretty far because the 1" ripsaw is a hardpack track and is completely useless in the pow so you momentum is slowed really fast and make up with more throttle and the rad isn't being cooled with the slow speed and the exchanger is so hot its making ice dams as soon as you hit the 200 degrees.

End result deep lug track needed, you know whats weird is that I've never had an ice dam in my exchanger with both tracks and I ride in the pow most of the time.

Maybe its the kind of snow around here. I have had other yamahas before this and i never had problems with the cooling like this one.

My wifes phazer overheated almost constanly through tight trails, but it was totally cured with the yami fan kit. Not a single over heat since. Pity i cannot say the same about my nytro lol

i actually modified the right side panel some. i drilled some holes under the cooler to let water drain out, my overheating issues have been sliced in half. as far as coolant is concerned i just use prestone anti-freeze with a richer mix then normal (ussually around 65:35 coolant to water mix). seams to get the job done...i have no fan btw,

Thats what I did last year and its most of the bottom part gone..now the snow just plugs..and then falls thru the bottom..It works great! Everyone should do it. I secured a small mesh screen on it so random things dont enter ever

This past week we got over 8 inches of snow. So today i finally got the Phazer out with the freeride track. Ended up going back with stock clutching expect for C2 setting on the secondary clutch. In really deep snow i was pulling like 10800 and normally 11300-11600 most of the time. Its hard to get the best clutching for operating on hard packed and deep snow. I still have the snow dams building up on the heat exchanger but not as bad as before with the stock track. Today i couldnt get the water temp over 88c And i think the reason it got that hot was there was ice build up on the metal screen i have in front of the rad. So between going back to stock clutching and the free ride track . I really think the motor is not working as hard as the freeride helps get the machine on top the snow. I also went back to regular prestone antifreeze and mixed it good for -40c or -40f. The warning light did come on but i was running low on gas. Next weekend should have more time for riding.

Second day out, after a short break in day, the light came on when it was -5f. Brought it in to have the fan put on and no problem since with overheating, just the occasional drips of coolant on the garage floor and a huge pile of ice after it melts on the floor. Need to let it sit outside and drill the holes you guys have been talking about.
