Most guys fill up till it clicks and maby a little more - you can squeeze another gallon or so in if you keep - slowly filling it. or pull up the white tube in the tank and fill er up. when mine runs out - i can keep starten and running it for a couple of miles. watch out for the guy behind you when she quits - you loose everything - and she comes to a screchen stop with no lights.

Good info waldo1, Heys guys this was just an idea someone wanted to post, Hell, I kinda like the redneck style gas can idea, Whatever works is good by me, and as far as caps coming loose, duct tape them on, honestly how many have actually had there oil bottles fall apart (not caps coming off) when carring all that extra oil on the 2 strokes sleds.

Remap?? I am still pretty sure these ECU's can't be reflashed like a shi-doo or Polaris. These are basic EFI systems in Yammys.
As Dan mentioned, pull the white thingy out of the neck of the tank and put a 1" squared slot in the bottom of it, then stick it back in....that hole will allow the air out and the fuel in!!! Another gallon!!

I have the white thingy out of all my sleds and leave it out.

gas
If you don't trailer your sled, take that white thingy and throw it in the bushes somewhere. Parting with it is definetly worth the extra gallon of gas. The best gas hauling rig I've ever seen is my 03 mountain. Two 5 gallon cans side by side in the back rack. With this setup I can go where no man has gone. The only problem is I can't anyone with the same capacity to come with me.
Got lost once while riding out in the sticks and rode almost 50 miles with the fuel light on. When I pulled up to the gas staion, I put 10.7 gallons. Was the pump lying or do the gas tanks swell with age?

thanks

My tube is out. Not a problem to fill all the way if you are going to ride right away, but dont fill all the way for storage as gas can expand.
Back to the original post, rarely negative or smartazzed about anything, but under the hood like that, with possible gas vapors or leakage blowing back on a hot engine does not seem all that safe to me.

I average 15 to 16 mpg
I ran out at 110 miles also. This is riding moderate speeds in NH. I was very shocked and bigtime disappointed.
NOS
Turbo50Mike: Yes you are correct. Nos is not flammable but the oxygen in it is the problem. In a fire the Nos will heat up and decompose very fast and there is the problem. It explodes.
This is a fire and explosion of a nos bottle at a local dragstrip. This all happened in less than a minute. The driver got out but is badly scared over half of his body. The on board extinguisher system could not handle the explosion. Nos is safe untill something else goes wrong then it compounds the problem.

almost ran out again from duberville to hornpaine (90 miles) - it was very slushy, warm and I was railen wide open - leaken oil out of the chain case the whole way. she starts to sputter but will go on for a few more miles - going to dealer today for chaincase, stearing bushings, new shock, more wheels, track clips (all but 2 fell off), and remap for the gas mileage thing.

How?

waldo, it is very hard on your high pressure pump to keep running it out of fuel. fuel is the what cools the pump, you have significantly reduced your pumps life by running it out of fuel. pump cavitates and overheats without fuel. this is fact.

Ever see those fuel containers they make for camp stoves? They are aluminum with A nice oring screw top and sold at canadian tire. I think I would trust one of those before I would trust plastic and aluminum wont spark.

saddle tank
I use two Wedco jerry cans, one on each running board, bungeed down with 1 long rubber strap.
The cans are the gas/oil type (for chainsaws). There is a groove in the body of the can between the two chambers which helps hold the bungee in place (key feature).
Like this: http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/produ ... sp?mi=6300
or this: http://www.madsens1.com/gascan.htm
Hook one end of the bungee in a hole in the running board, lay it over the seat and hook the other end in the other running board. Now just insert the cans and make sure the bungee seats into the groove.
(Note: The running board edges came with grip profile from factory on the mountain in 2003. I think that's a key component too.)
The setup is simple, quick and I haven't had any problems and run as hard as anyone on some of the ugliest neglected routes we have. The setup has never let me down.
Guys I ride use antifreeze containers. They carry them in small panier packs bungeed to the running boards similar to the above setup.

Good idea. Would have been nice having some racefuel on board for some friendly racing on high boost. Also a fuel switch to switch between pumpfuel in the tank and the racefuel in the front tank would have been nice. If the front tank is well made it should not be a problem, remember we already carry 10 gallons of fuel right between our legs.
