First impressions of my Attak on the trail

Last week on the perfect flat trail one day I nailed it from start to 60 mph... 2.5 seconds.. faster then a Lamborghini.

I’m really enjoying it this weekend. Unreal power band.
Your first 4 stroke?.... Wait til you ride all season with out that 2 stroke smell on your clothes...I can't stand when 2 strokes come by... lingers in the helmet... nasty..

Especially the older Arctic Craps, they always stink terribly.

I agree with you. Try following one for a day think it lasted about 20 miles before I passed him

My first yes. Put about 300 miles on it over 3 days. Getting the suspension dialed in. Was too soft so was borrowing out and now too hard but still bottoms a bit on really big stuff. Maybe normal as you can’t avoid any bottoming out and have a good ride for most situations?

I did add the real cooler with just over 1.5” of protection so maybe that’s the issue and there’s no solution.

Adjusted idle while good and hot to 1500 to make Yamaheaters happy (they are awesome). Overall though after all the work I did he Sled was flawless.

Big boy spring... they come different sizes... I went that way and hardly ever bottom out. And the non GT spring/shock isn't as good for that as the GT..ask me how I know.

My neighbor has the Doo e tec type.. you know.. high pressure injection...told me it doesn't stink cause it's new tech, etc. well it does stink still becasue I followed them one day on a ride..

2 stroke is 2 Stroke. Rode with a bunch of etechs this weekend but they still smell. Quiet though.

On the spring - I had a big boy spring but took it out. On the lowest spring preload and c clip setting I couldn’t get the sag right. Couldn’t get it to move at all. So I put in the stock spring.

I was thinking of increasing preload a bit but someone told me get the sag right and then that is that. Don’t change it. Only adjust dampening. Which I did. But I always though you could stiffen the spring a bit to help. What’s the best way to balance it? I will have to read up on some old posts I have on the spring.

On my first Attak bought brand new non GT I had to re valve the shock and add a big boy..that fixed it. On my GT's they rode pretty darn good as is but I added a big boy only no shock rebuild... I don't bottom..neither on the first Attak after the shock rebuild and spring... It still rides so nice.. I think you got the wrong info. It was a fact many years ago on these machines you needed to revalve and big boy it. Also if you hear clunking a low speed and in moguls..its' the transfer rod.. normal... there was a fix out to deaden the sound but I never bothered..

Interesting. Maybe what I'm hearing is the transfer rod then. I don't feel like I'm getting jarred abruptly or anything. Just heard what sounds like something rubbing on a hard hit. Looked at my rear cooler but it's fine, never been touched. Could it be the lugs of the track rubbing the hyfax on my cooler protectors?

The transfer rod noise happens only at very low speeds in deep moguls.. just a few miles an hour..at least for me... loud clunks. A rubbing noise might be it's hitting the protection. I didn't like the way you did that but hey...

But again these Attaks usually had the shock revalved and a big boy spring... Again my first Attak wasn't a GT and it bottomed out often until a shock revalve and big boy. The last tw0 Attaks have been GT's and they are much better against bottoming. But I still added a big boy after a while to make sure it didn't bottom at all. No shock revalve on the GT ...didn't bother..
You can check this on very old posts ..not much recently as the guys have moved on to other machines. But back in 07 to 10 there was plenty of talk about that. You may even find the transfer rod noise fix. Noise fix only. Basically a rubber bushing added on the shaft..to sound deaden it.

Thanks. It's likely not the transfer rod then. I can't see the big boy spring being what I need. As I said, I had it in, and it did not move at all when I sat on it. Could barely get it to compress when I pushed on the bumper. Thing was SOLID. :D

What's wrong with the way I did it? LOL. Not too many options really...needed the 1.5" of protection. It is what it is though.

It didn't taper from the cooler to the upper rear wheels. Seemed to massive.. I would have to take another look since I don't remember... I really can't help you anymore.. Your bottoming out and won't use the big boy so either your shock is shot or you need the revalve and bigger spring.. your stock spring might be shot.. they don't stay good forever.
So 1 1/2 inches isn't going to make a big difference with bottoming if you took out the protectors..you follow me? you have to add a spring and or revalve.. I would do both. You might of had the much bigger big boy in there. Yamaha made different sizes.. There should be numbers on it.. or get in touch with a pro like Ulmer etc. I used Pioneer..Bruce is out now I believe and closed.. but I see someone might of opened it again.. I would go with Ulmer or whom ever someone here recommends to find out which spring you have and about revalveing it. I'm surprised there isn't a sticky on it.
On a side note I saw a 2010 Vector LTX at a dealer for sale yesterday studded with oem protection only ..guess what.. the fins on the cooler were shreaded..not good..

I hear ya. Just thinking it all through. I haven't even adjusted the spring I have, as it's on a pretty light setting, so I'll start there. I have the other spring if I do end up needing it though. More just talking out loud.

On the protectors, I see what you're saying about the taper, and you may be right, could be that I'm losing travel space there. I could always change them. Piece of cake now that I've done it once, and now the reasoning behind so much. I'll likely put some stuff on the protectors I made before I ride the next time, some colored wax or something, so I can see where it's worn away (the rub) and then decide to go from there.

Thanks!

Oh, how's the trails up your way? They hanging on?
