Do the hand gaurds make that big of a difference as far as keeping the grips warm? Are they a must have? My updated bars on my 06 Apex get plenty warm but as soon as I take my hands off the bars even for a few seconds they cool right off and take several minutes to heat back up. I am also thinking of adding a mid height windsheild to see if that helps as well.

I've found that the handguards on the updated bars do not keep the handwarmers hotter. The handguards make a difference in terms of keeping the wind off your hands. However, once it gets really cold, their effect is negligible.

This year you should try wearing gloves...

Seriously, I installed the updated bars, have a short windy and no guards. Hot grips heat up fine, haven't ever had cold hands wearing Goretex Yamaha gloves.

The new bars are very slightly warmer but the diameter is smaller - harder to hold on to - keep your old bars and do the wire change - you'll think your on an old sx. Another dropped yamaha ball.
