I take the load off but haven't let the air out, I wonder if there is any truth to that

I just raise the whole sled off the ground for storage.

It really doesn't matter, they will be fine regardless. If you read the manual that came with them it should mention removing the air sleeve, cleaning air chamber, then adding a pillow pack of float fluid, and reassemble. Doing this will remove any of the moisture that may pit the shaft, there is a chromed shaft just like every other shock. If you have less than 2000 miles on them your probably fine, if you haven't done anything to them in a year or more you may want to at least clean the air chamber out. Just don't forget the Float Fluid, it lubricated the seals for the air sleeve, which keeps your shocks air spring charge.

I dont have floats, and never had one apart, but assuming it has a shaft, I would let the air out and let them collapse. have changed a thousand shocks over the years and most are doomed from rust on the shafts. with my machines, I usually spray the shafts with silicone
