My buddy's Doo blew up on (shocking) our annual Old Forge trip, and he advanced his plans to purchase a Nytro next fall to, well, last Thursday. He bought a Nytro RTX with 400 miles on it from Big Moose Yamaha. We raced on a empty, straight trail and he got me by one sled length around 30 mph after an even start. I started to catch him around 60 mph, but we ran out of room before I could close on him. On 4th lake, he did the same thing and it took me forever to catch him but finally did after 80 mph. I rode his Nytro and they have some major low end grunt, noticably stronger than my Apex RTX. It runs out of steam at 80 mph, however. Meanwhile, my Apex pulls hard (not quite as hard as the Nytro though) through the entire rpm range, whether it be at 20 mph, 60 mph or 90 mph. Are you guys beating Nytros with your stock Apex/Attaks?

Out on the lake, I ran into to a Crossfire 800. My buddy's Nytro pulled him and me, while the 800 and I stayed tied. I pulled past him around 90 mph, and was able to maintain a one ski length lead for about 1/2 mile. To be honest, even though it was clear I was winning by a bit and he wasn't gaining any ground, but was close enough to tease, I wanted him to keep trying to blow up that Cat's 800  (couldn't find an emoticon with an evil grin).

On a side note, I grenaded my belt at 95 mph. The was the first belt I have ever blown in nearly 20,000 miles of riding. That belt had about 6400 miles on it.

By any chance after you put a new belt on...did you race him again (with the new belt on)? Couple of other questions for you. Is your Apex studded? Is the Nytro studded?

I beat the Nytros easily. They will hang till about 60 and then fall behind. That's a lot of miles on a belt and I guarantee it was hurting you.

Good question, did you run again with a new belt? It can make a huge difference.

Yeah, I thought of that too (referring to the belt) and so did he. IN fact, he diminished the results because my belt broke a mile later, figuring that is why he beat me. Problem is, my spare belt came off my old RX-1 when I replaced it for preventive maintenance purposes at 6000+ miles. Therefore, the spare belt probably would net the same results. Also, knowing how many miles were on the spare, I didn't want to push my luck by hammering on it again!

I ride with this guy all the time, so there will be plenty of opportunities to race again. I will invest in a new belt and report back...

Still, that Nytro has some real power at lower rpms...quite impressive, the grunt that it pulls with. It needs a lot fewer rpms than the Apex to do that as well. However, nothing can match the smooth, consistent power throughout the entire rpm range that the R1 motor produces. My buddy said that is his favorite part of my sled.

Neither sled is studded.

Have you guys had similar results against 800 Cats? (see original post for details)

put ulmers clutch kit in your apex and say goodbye to your buds nytro, my brother has a 08 nytro and just with ulmers clutch kit in it wasnt even a race from bottom to top end.

My Nytro beats my Apex for about 500', then the Apex catches and passes it without a problem. 07 Apex ER against 08 Nytro FX. Both sleds have their place, the Apex is a great trail sled/lake racer. The Nytro is a dirt bike with a track on it. I change my belt every year on all of my sleds. Wig

I picked up an 08 nytro 2 weekends ago and rode it for the first time this weekend. This thing is a blast to ride. It won't hang with my Apex on top end, but the pull of it was hard to believe. Easily the funnest sled I've ever ridden.
