while riding in quebec last weekend i ran out of fuel and my buddy towed me 1 mile to the gas station.his 05 rx1 took $43.00 (still running)and my 07 attak gt took only $40.00 filled to the rim.i did not pull out the plastic insert.but i dont think it would have taken another $3.00 if i did remove it.by the way fuel is $4.00 a gallon up there.

I think the apex/attack's have a slightly different pickup location...I could be wrong but our Apex seems to need quite a bit of fuel in it before it picks it up.

if you had removed the plastic piece from the tank and filled it to the top you would have driven to the pumps instead of being towed. remove it and re-locate the fuel tank vent up under the handelbar pad. on the rx1 its attached to the frame behind the secondary. as long as its above the top of the tank and not kinked it will be fine. i have driven to the pumps and put in 40 liters, must have been on fumes near the end though.

The important part is too take the vent line and have it come at least part way up the riser. If you don't all the extra gas you put in will be left on the ground beside the pump. The line must be higher then the level of fuel in the tank. Made a big difference for me.

Even if you pull the plastic tube, you won't get more than about 38 liters (8.5 Cdn gallons) in an Apex from the point where the sled is quitting every time you try to accelerate. Without pulling the tube it more like 35 liters or 8 gallons.
There is a huge reduction in fuel range between an 05 RX-1 and an Apex.
In some of my old posts I talked about getting 177 miles to a tank on an RX-1 riding normally, yet I'd be lucky to get 120 miles with the Apex (taking it easy in ideal hard packed conditions).
Also with my RTX I've run it basically out of gas in 80 miles when riding hard. My buddies 06 Apex ER gets even worse mileage than my RTX by 5-10% too.
I still don't understand why no-one has offered an auxilliary fuel tank for the Apex chassis. With an extra 10+ liters/2.5 gallons, these sleds would have a very acceptable fuel range.
Everyone was so hyped up about the 7 gallon fuel tank on the FX Nytro that there are many options available, yet stock for stock it has the same fuel range as the Apex.
One tip with the Apex is you can typically ride at least 10 miles after it first runs out of gas. The fuel pickup is at the front so if you restart it and take it easy you can coax quite a few extra miles out of it (as long as there aren't any hills to climb...).

inoticed my i frist bought my apex er and went to take it off the trailer it was showing a full bar on fuel gauge but it ran out of fuel. i thought these had 10 gallon tanks. the first ride (half and half riding hard) i got 14 mpg. thought it would be closer to 16 but oh well.

Take the fuel cap off and you'll see the fuel opening is lined with a white plastic piece.
If you take your hand and push this white piece sideways near the bottom and simultaneously pull up on it it will come out.
Without this in, you can fill the tank right to the very top.
The advantage is it will now hold an roughly an extra 3 liters or about 2/3 of a gallon.
Unfortunately it will also fill above the vent port on the tank so as the fuel and air heats up and expands in the tank, it will be pumped out the vent line. Also if it is overfilled and you sit forward on the seat and up against the tank a little (putting pressure on it) gas will also come out the vent line.
Even if you re-route the vent into the handlebars it will still come out if you park the sled overfilled.
If we're going to park the sleds we leave the fuel level an inch or so lower, just like the plastic tube forces you to. If we need maximum range, we fill it right to the tip of the cap and this does make a difference.

you can now add 4-6 more liters and out run most sleds on fuel mileage.
