Well I had an unfortunate accident with my sled that broke my back and took me out for the season. I’m healing and getting better and my ego/pride is hurt pretty bad. I’ve been sledding for 25 years and had a slow speed whoopsie daisy.

The damage to the sled is a couple of broken plastic panels and windshield which isn’t really a big deal. The part I’m concerned about is when I crashed the sled it flipped over and pinned the throttle full open. The sled eventually shut itself off due to no oil pressure, but I don’t know if at full throttle if it may have damaged some of the internal bearings. My buddies the next day took it out for a mile or two and everything seemed okay. I would just hate for next season to get some miles on the motor and something bad happens.

I have insurance on the machine and plan on getting all the broken plastic fixed, but if an engine issue comes up next snow season then I think I might be screwed.

The easy answer is well ride it and see what happens…. Well I can’t drive and I’m several hours away from the snowmobile trails. My buddies aren’t going to take a day away from their families and work to do that for me.

Has anyone ever dealt with a situation like this “Full Throttle and ran it out of oil” and everything is okay?

Thanks,

Having a tether goes a long way in these situations, depends how long it was running but I would say the motor should be ok since it shut down cause of the low oil sensor.

I don't have any answers for you on the issue, but gosh, sorry to hear about the accident. Get well soon! I'm planning to install a magnetic tether over the summer; this makes it official.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I will say that early this season I was testing my 2017 Sidewinder on a very high HP race tune. I had an oil hose from the bottom of oil tank come off (Loose Clamp) it leaked every drop of oil from the sled. After finishing the long WOT pull when I started coasting the sled shut off. Come to find out it ran out of oil and was throwing a code. Turns out the sled will only shut down with no oil pressure when the RPM's drop below 4500. I put the sled in my trailer, did a full oil/filter change, retightened the clamp and have put 2800 miles on the sled since. I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery.

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to hear that this is happened to other folks without serious issues. At the moment everything seems fine with the motor so I'm just going to put it away for next season and hope for the best. Dealer that looked at it as well also had the same response that everything should be okay on the motor.

As for the engine shutting off without oil pressure below 4500 RPM's as stated by Snody above.... Is there something in the service manaul or something that states this? My machine was full throttle upside down and ran until it shut off by itself. My buddies that recovered the sled said it had an oil pressure warning on the display. They flipped it over let it sit for a little while for the oil to drain back into the pan and resoviour and started it back up. It started and instantly shut off and repeated the oil warning (most likely due to air in the oil lines). They tried to start it again and then it ran and smoked a little and then everything seemed okay after that. That's what they told me...

Not sure if anything there is to do other than wait it out and roll the dice next season. I've got another 7 weeks in a back brace and was almost paralyzed in the crash. The good lord thought I have some more riding to do and felt that I needed to sit this year out for some reason.

Glad you are alive and on way to recovery. It happens. I would take my chances on motor. Maybe just normal oil change but that’s it.
