So we were having a lake association get together on the lake.....4 fire pits , hot dogs, beverages and social gathering. Planned snowmobile race for fun.
So I come early with the Venture GT and trailer full of wood and metal fire pit. Wearing my old coat and Duluth trading lined pants and no helmet just old bomber hat—-there to bring the wood and start the fires remember.
Well there is two groups of young guys standing around the sleds saying who was going to win the drag races on the lake. No lane prep just pine branches and little American flags stuck in the snow with an end about a 1/4 m down the lake at the Green Garbage can.
First group ...its going to be between the fancy wrapped 2020 850 Doo or the new 800 poo and remember the loud piped Cat.
Second group...no that Blue Yamaha Nytro is going to be hard to beat its a “1200”... I’m thinking these guys don’t know sleds...... as I tend the fires.
So I cant resist, I GO HOME and talk to my wife, and get my helmet and the Apex. We get officially sorted into classes and I am put in the 800+ ‘open’ class.
So FUN and funny. Nobody except the owner of the 850 Doo even knows I have come back with an APEX and am a threat.
So pairings are made its me and the older cat with the pipes.... few watch and I win handily. The flag man - Air Force Officer from near by base comes over after the first round and says, “ that thing is a beast, I think you got them covered” we smile and say nothing to the young guys. Few paying attention to the big guy with the work pants on.
So after the first few rounds the speculation of a Doo POO final is certain to some, others “no that Blue Piped loud Nytro is going to get them all.”
A round or two later, I get the Poo 800 -I hook up and am gone........a couple notice...still just the big guy in the lined work pants but ‘not’ a threat to their favorite.
Next couple rounds keep winning.
Then the Piped Nytro and I go,,,,,pull him start to finish. A couple more rounds and finally its the old big guy on the APEX and the 850 Doo in the final. He is the only one there who knows its NOT a certain win.
Anyway the start was TERRIBLE -for me-I sat and spun he got out way ahead but then I was pulling him in...at the FINISH I thought I had got him but went back to him and he points to me—YES. Good guy.
But all at the fires... about 1/2 track when he was well ahead as we passed...were eating hotdogs etc. and then. When they passed out awards and announced the winner........the old fat guy on His APEX..... “Mark you won?....YEP
Fun was had by all.....it was so interesting that the only person who new it was a race was the Competition on the 850 Doo.
Sorry so long just thought every now and then the old dog on a 2013 sled can have some fun—ENJOY

Nice story, Apexes are no joke, Apex turbo is a force to be reckoned with also. glad you had some fun.So we were having a lake association get together on the lake.....4 fire pits , hot dogs, beverages and social gathering. Planned snowmobile race for fun.

Don't forget the 82.325" risers and mohawk helmet. Oh, and jetpack backpack.

Great story! Something about the high rpm/gear reduction on these 4 cyl that gives it top end like no other sled I have rode. My turbo apex never fell flat up top, ever! I would run out of lake LOL. No 2 stroke can ever hang with a 4cyl in a long race. I am sure my sidewinder with more power would fall flat at 110 and my apex would soar past it like a jet.

VERY COOL!
Ya the "old" Apex's definitely have the legs up top.
Even compared to stronger and lighter sleds that "should" be able to outrun them.
That's kinda funny too because the basic engine design precedes the sled itself going back to the original R1 of the late 90's.

Thanks Guys it was fun.
Listening to these guys talk—-realizing compared to the TY info I am used to they didn’t have a clue— I came to realize we TYers are a relatively well informed bunch., LOL
But I have always liked a sleeper who does WELL.
That’s what was so amazing.....no one KNEW APEXS fly in a drag race except the 850 Doo rider......he Knew

Thanks for the read definitely enjoyed it. My stockish apex will run with or better than most non turbo sleds out there and it's a 06 with over 11k miles of smiles.

Thank you very impressive. I used to ride with a buddy. Who rode a Skidoo mod 700. With an expert X. He was adamant about the torque. Next year we rode he was on a 2003 RX1! That got my attention. He introduced me to the up north trail system. Mn and Wi. I have been hooked ever since.
