hey guys....im what u'd call a flatlander. never ridden in extreme powder, well atleast nothin over 16" solid powder. but im 17 and snowmobiling is gonna decide where i live. more and more trails r being closed cuz of ppl makin a bad name for sledders around here. what im wondering is what exactly do u guys ride on out there? is there public land or is it private? im very interested in riding in the mountains. wondering where u guys ride and how much snow u get? i've heard guys say that once they hit fresh powder that its so much better than trail riding. well trail ridin is all i've done and want to know what u guys think? thanks for all the info-

Talk about sledding ...........the snow gets high enough to cover the alders , then you just go wherever the heck you want to ...........we hunt for fox, wolf , and Lynx from our snowmachines it's awesome ..........

In colorado the trails are all public land maintained by the snowmobile clubs. Of course i ride in colorado, and we average about 500 inches a year where i live. Fresh powder is more fun than riding on the trail, because you can whip the sled around and it gets more fun. I wouldnt hit deep powder with a rage unless you get a longer track with some 2" paddles.
Riding in the powder is fun, but you always need to take a safety kit because once you get in it, you can get lost or stuck very easily and a safety kit might be all you have for the night.

Where I live, very small town in Rural Alberta, there is no such thing as a trail. We ride everywhere, through fields, down to the river, anywhere. The snow has sucked here, so we have become mountain riders. This will be my 6th year, and next weekend will be my 50+ trip. Once you hit the big hills, play in endless powder you will NEVER want to waste your time on trails again. Get a video from someone that has played in Revelstoke, then get loaded up, give me a call, and lets go.

Most trails to the play areas are on state highways (Hwy 212 at Cooke City, MT) or forest service roads. The play areas are located in the forest service usually, sometimes it will be BLM lands. Cooke City avaerages about 300 in of snow/year. Here's a taste from New Years. We don't have private lands being closed down; but, the greenies sure make it tough on us. It's a constant battle between us and them for access to forest service lands.

The Snowy Range outside Laraime Wyoming is pretty good.
My favorite place is Pinedale Wyoming, CDT trail, Horse Creek, Greys River, Green river lakes, Togetee, Dubois plus more all can be reached from this location plus Jackson Hole is only 77 mile from Pinedale to watch or compete in the World Championship Hill Climb.

I used to ride the trails, then I got my first long track mtn sled. Wiith a 136", 1 1/4" track (yamaha of course) and boy did I Have fun leaveing my buddies on their 1" track machines in my powder.
The long and short of it is, once you ride an untracked meadow swimming in 2+ feet of powder for about a mile, cut through the trees to the next meadow ride it never seeing your hands cause the snows over your windshield, then cut up a hill and have to turn out because the snows so deep you can't get over the top, you have not been sledding in my opion.

I moved from michigan to northwest montana this year hoping to find the deep stuff. it started out well then it warmed up ,today its close to fifty out there so ridings done for now.the riding i did get was awsome .fresh pow blowin up over the windsheild coverin your goggles. fun stuff.

Hell yeah, I got a couch. The snow is setup now though just like Markgyver said for his area Cooke has been seeing 35+ temps. Weather man says snow and cold on the way though. I'm hoping he's right.

If you drive to Alaska you have to come through the Yukon, we have a 50 year record in snowfall here in the southern yukon, If you stop long enough for a ride changes are you would never make it to Alaska it is that good here right now.
