GPS advise

I bought a Garmin 76cs. Has all the bells and whistles, but to me it's something like my cell phone. I have to wade through all the technology just to use the darn thing. I wish it was much easier to use. I have better things to have to learn in my life.

The beauty of the Magellan is ease of use Spray25 had another brand last year, after he checked out mine he bought the color model for himself worked out well we shared software ;)!

I've had a long stretch of Garmin's. Their user interface is constant across the line. The Lowrance and Magellan units I had weren't easy to use, but that's my opinion.

It's hard to say what's best without a price range and a "I want it to do X". For me screen size is king. Makes it easy to glance at and see where you're at. I've got a 276C and I really like it. But it's pricey.

The 60C seems like a good call as well. The newer Garmin color screens are very reflective. So they are easy to see in daylight without the backligthing on, which makes them easier on batteries, if you choose to go that route.

Look at used or refurbished units as well. These things are like PCs, they keep getting better and better. Dopes like me upgrade, and you get last years model at a good discount.

Whatever model you look at, keep in mind you may want detailed maps for it, which might cost extra.

Have used a lowrance globalnav212 for the past 6 years. Tough unit:dropped twice onto rocks/concrete, still works. Excellent tracking and plot refresh rate (more than 3 times/sec.) 6hr battery life on 4AA recharge NiCads. The lows: small screen, only 4 plot trail saves, small buttons, short battery life on regular batteries, especially in the cold. For snowmobiling, larger screen, high visiblity pointers, number readouts work best. If its tough to use while walking around, it will be alot harder to use while bombing along on your sled. Other than that, practice and get to know the unit before you head out.

I too have the Magellan Meridian Color. I had the Garmin Etrex Vista but found the screen was too small. I find that both are very easy to use but I actually like the compass better in the Garmin. The magellan compass read in degrees where the Garmin will tell you if you are going N, S, E or W and anything in between instead of degrees. I like the screen size of the Magellan and one other available software for the meridian is the Mapsend Direct Route which gives you turn by turn directions however not useful on the trail. I'm still trying to figure out how to load my own trail maps onto memory cards to use on my gps. Does anyone have any tips? I know there was a posting a while back but unable to find.

The Magellan Explorist 300 is easy to use way easier than the Meridian gold one I had and took back. This one has more does more and its user freindly with a fair size screen and 16mb of memory.

Garmin 176c package [Boat US/ West Marine], came with two mounts, one for vehicle & one for the toy[boat or sled], works awesome, save yourself the trouble of batteries & hardwire the unit, my LCD did freeze up at -25 to -30 F, that just means it is time to stop at a warm pub :drink: My only experience are Garmin units, never had trouble, once learned not a problem to use. Enjoy your new unit :D
