I have the nuvi 500 with red pine maps and the GPS works awesome, the maps are ok, it will work like a normal GPS about 85% of the time the rest of the time it thinks your off the trail or next to it. Turn by Turn is about the same 80-85% accurate. Better then nothing but not like a car.
The thing about the NUVI I dont like is it doesn't do tracks so if you take a fun fire road or special trail it wont save that so you can use it again. Otherwise its a awesome touch screen easy to see and works everytime.

I just recently found out that on the Nuvi, you can save custom routes. Reset your trip log, ride the trail you want to save, then select the "Where to" option and then select the bare feet icon. Click to save and name the custom route.

That's water I want a gps that you start at beginning of ride and end when you get back to truck. That way you could derided buddy led routes with confidence as it shows you turn by turn when you reload the route. Is this that exact?

Yes, the Nuvi will log tracks that can later be downloaded. I used my Nuvi 750 for the past few years, and it worked well. You can load custom maps on it, as well as "clear" overlays of many maps/tracks that you create ahead of time. I was running about 4-5 separate overlays on it simultaneously.
This year, I decided to try a 7" Android tablet running a program called Oruxmaps (a free app). It worked well and is very customizable. It's not for everyone, as the tablet is REALLY huge, but for touring on my Venture it works well. I wanted a large screen, and since I do a lot of backcountry exploring so I also wanted the ability to display imagery and numerous other maps. Many maps are available for free download (to include all the Google stuff, OSM, and a host of others), and will be stored on the tablet so no cell signal is required. With some effort, you can also create just about any type of custom map that you want (I haven't done it yet, but I plan to scan pages from my plat book to load on it).
I looked really hard at the Montana, but for my intended use the 7" tablet provided more options, cost less, and I can use it for other stuff too (such as music through my helmet speakers, and I can watch movies on it at the end of the day back at the cottage). Note: some type of "data-tip" gloves are required for the touch screen, since it's similar to the screen on an Iphone, etc. I picked up a pair when Cabela's had them for half off, and they work well.
