What is a good GPS with a 12v supply to use on a sled? Do they have trail maps for the GPS yet? Does the GPS have a graphical display which at least displays the roads?

Yes you can get a topo map with elevations and some places have snowmobile trails already inputed into the map. Many clubs have downloaded their maps to the net and if you check with your state you can probably download those maps. Most from what Im seeing are using Garmin and Delorme.

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend C mounted to the gas cap with a Garmin handlebar mount. ( very easy to do) I run a program called Topo Canada in the Gps which shows hydrolines,Pipelines,Bushroads,Lakes,Rivers,Creeks, gives elevations for everything and even has detailed City maps. Most of our trail system is on Hydro and Pipelines so its easy to see where you are on a trail map. The feature I like best on the Gps is the track log. This has saved my a$$ more than once. Even at night you can just turn around and follow your track back the way you came. The GPS will also show any roads, turns,or creeks ahead. It would be nice to see a Gps as standard equiptment on all sleds. Once you get comfortable using one it's hard to ride without it.

sx7001,
That's some great info. Thanks.
I'm getting a Garmin Legend C w/ the handlebar mount and 12V accessory plug-in. Does the Garmin have to lay flat? Reason I ask is because I'd like to mount my to the handlebars. But if I can't I'll mount it to the Gas cap.
How did you mount to the gas cap w/ the handlebar mount?
Thanks in advance.

Mounting an GPS on the hood is not a good idea. The hood vibrates more than you think. I've had GPSr mounted on the hood on earlier but I had to move it to the handlebar cause the whole GPS vibrated into another dimension. Impossible to see anything on the map, and it shook on idle to.
That was on an Viper 700, not a 4stroker.
Another drawback is that the GPS is getting far away, the screen is already small, no need to make it look even smaller.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to consider that before I do any drilling. Of course there isn't really a "hood" on the Apex and the guage area might be less prone to vibrating than on the Viper. If it does vibrate too much next to the guage, I'll prob use sx7001's good idea.

sx7001 said:No more dead batteries. I cut 3 feet out of the cable so it can't rub on the plastic and now that it's hard wired the gps stays on when i shut the sled down.
How did you hard wire the 12V acc. plug for power all the time?

Bolted a RAM mount to the back of my handlebar riser. Sits perfectly behind the handlebar pad. I ran a wire from the battery for the electric shield, GPS and and GPS heater all with thier own in line fuses.
