Great pics GypsyRoots. Took me awhile to get them downloaded on my slow dial up connection but it was well worth the wait. I was wondering what that wooden contraption in one of your photos was? Topper

Thanks Topper!
I am sorry for taking so long, but my computer has been acting up...
Sorry about the size too, I tried making them smaller, but like I said, my computer is not cooperating.
The wooden contraption you are talking about is a fish wheel. Commonly used by dog mushers and other subsistance purpouses that require large amounts of fish to be caught.
I will be adding captions to every picture as time permits, I am not even close to finished with either day yet. This is going top be a long process, with very detailed info, but having a full time job is getting in the way!
Ah! and then there will be the videos on youtube, but I will finish with the pictures first.

Thanks again and be well! ;)!

Hey Pat, glad you are enjoying it! But I am just getting started.
Neither day one nor day two are complete yet, lots of pictures to come and captions to follow. Then there will be vids too...should be done by summer ... hehehe!
I just thought the ice was kind funny shaped, but that is not the ice that caused any issues, the problem is when it forms behind the wheel, locking up everything.
As for the snow, just wait, there will be lots of snow in the next few days....

I'm looking forwards to reading more about your adventure. Great post.

Can you post some more information on your hyfax lube system? Its really impressive to see what these sleds can ride over. How many pairs of hyfax did you bring with you/go through?

I think if I was planning a trip like that I'd be tempted to install idler wheels every 6" or so and try to set the sled up so it can ride with no snow at all.

One of these days I'm going to make it up to Alaska with my sled. Its always been a goal of mine to see Alaska.

It's a real pleasure to read your posts GR. The snaps are an added bonus so we can all understand and visualize your Alaskan paradise. Your adventures leave me in awe...
I know you have previously mentioned how little snow you get in your area, but man, that has to be hard on the sled. Is this just an extreme winter of no snow for you guys, or are the low snow conditions normal for the coastal region you live?
GR, I noticed your suspension only has the idler wheels that were stock on the sled last fall, although you have added the smaller set up front. My dealer notified me of a Yamaha service bulletin 2 months ago and they installed 4 extra idler wheels in the skid (no charge). You should inquire about it. You've gotta be wearing down the hyfax!

Lookin forward to reading about the rest of your trip.

Thanks for shareing you photos, You have gone places most men can only dream about . You going alone tell's what kind of man you really are ,The kind that would rather die out on the ice, than sit home thinking about it. I glad you made it safe and my hat is off to you.

Wow! What a trip! I could only imagine a trip like that! Congrats, and thanks for sharing your trip with us!!

Well thanks! That is quite the compliement.
I am sorry for taking so long, but my full time job is getting in the way...hehehe
I will try to speed things up...
Thanks to all for the comments and keep posted, there is more to come...
Also, I am not done with with the first couple of days either, so keep going back and checking, new photos and captions should be up tonight.

The hyfax had no lube! No just plain old DRY hyfax! I had an extra set. I had to change one side about half way on the trip, but the other one is still on! So, the one that broke had almost 3500 miles on it, and the one that didn't (still on the sled) has damn near 4000 miles and still has some meat on it. I estimate that the original set accumulated a total of 800 miles on ZERO snow.

I know what you mean, but with the conditions I face here that is a tough call. Wheels without any kind of suspension just break around here. The ice is very hard and usually exposed, so when you hit a 6 inch "knob" of ice, you just break them off! There were times that I wished I had tires instead...hehehe

If I can be of any assistance...say the word, I have offered many times, and will keep on doing it...Anyone interested in coming out to the Bush, my front door is open!

Hope this answers some of your questions... ;)!

We use sno-gos here in ways they were never intended to see!
Hard...huummm... I like to use the expression "hostile enviroment", as to what the sleds go through here... hehehe ...serious though, hostile!
Well, I live in a place of cold, ice and wind. If the snow stayed, it would be good, but the wind blows here, in fact it blows untill it sucks!
20 mph is a calm day here! 40 mph and all the small planes are still flying! We don't get the 150 mph that other parts of the state get, but we see 35 mph straight for weeks on end, and when it is -30F, it gets kinda rude!
So the wind blows all the snow away, the little that gets left packs hard as concrete, and we usually get a couple of mid-winter thaw-outs.
I live in the harsh part of the state, harsh in the words of alaskans.
A true windblown frozen desert.

I will ask, but as I mentioned on an earlier post, the more wheels you have, the more wheels you will break. -30F ice is very very hard, harder than pavement or rock. It is a tough call, but in the end, hyfax is still cheaper.
Not bad though, 3500 miles on the original hyfax and belt...with all the abusive conditions the black lite has seen this season... I can live with those numbers...
Call me slow poke, but I will keep on posting the pictures and captions, it's just going to take time.
There is a lot still to be posted, so stay tuned! ;)!

Great thread with excellent (albeit humongous) pics - but you should REALLY spend a few mins and find a free tool to resize photos. :) Tons out there.

http://www.tucows.com/Windows/DesignToo ... eResizers/

I have tools to resize pics, my problem is that my computer has 20 MB worth of memory left. Too many pictures and waaay too much music.
These pictures are not able to fit in my photo program, they are coming straight out of my external hard drive and into RINGO.
I know there must be a way, but I am not very hip to computers and their by-ways.
I also tried to resize them in RINGO's website, but they do not offer that tool.
I am really sorry, as I realize some folks use slow net connections, and it alo makes it hard to really see the pics, between my job and posting, I will try to find a solution.
Thanks for bringing it up! I will try to correct this soon.
Glad you guys are enjoying!!!!

GR.

I figured that while I figure out a way of resizing the pictures without bringing them into my hard drive (no room), I would start posting the videos on YouTube.
The clips are short and of bad quality, the sound is also badly distorted most of the time.
But it was my best shot at it, with the equipment I had and the fact that I was not only alone, but also had a time crunch to get back to work on time.
Proper documentary filming takes a lot of time.
Anyway, hope some of you enjoy them...
And I will also be working on more pictures, but maybe a little smaller. ;)!
You can see the videos at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrCaJv1rE04

There are 123 clips in total and I am working on #4, so just like the thread here, it will take time...but on the bright side, there's our summer sledding subject...lol
Take care ;)!
