I installed an Ulmer clutch kit. The clutch engages around 4500 but at 7000 there is a big jolt when it shifts. Very noticable. Anyone else experience this? Sled is stock except for the 1.5" freeride (clutch did the same last year with the stock track). Same with old or new belt - no difference.

It sounds like your secondary is sticking. Might want to try cleaning the helix. They seem to gum up with belt dust.

I clean the seconday twice a season and had my Yamaha tech change the seconday to A2 for the freeride. He said everything was good and nothing in the secondary was worn/dirty.

It only happened after installing the clutch kit.

weird, mine never did that, i had the same set up as you on 2 phazers..give Allen Ulmer a call..its probably something simple..

hummm... ok will it's probably not that.

I think I'm running my secondary on A1 (I have Ulmer kit and am in Manitoba too) but I don't have the Freeride track.

It still sounds like the Secondary is suddenly opening up, not gradually like it is suppose to. A2 would be more preload on the spring (10 degrees if I remember right but please correct me if I'm wrong). Perhaps that's the issue...

Just throwing out some ideas.

Did you call Alan and tell him what it going on? I don't think it is related, but he might have suggested a modification of your clutch weights when you went to a Freeride. If you haven't talked with him on either thing, give him a call.

My Ulmer clutch kit has not produced a hard shift with either track I have run it with. It has worked awesome. Alan modified my clutch weights when I went to the 144 x 1.25 " track from stock.

X2 - Call Alan

Allen is the most helpful vendor I've dealt with. He helped me dial in the clutch and gave me pointers when I ran into trouble.

Don't rule out the primary. I had the bushing slide out of the primary, and wrecked 1 of the bushings in the secondary. However, with your sled I would agree that it sounds like some friction somewhere. Check everything with a fine tooth comb.

I did email him today. Haven't hard back yet.

I did speak to him when I switched to the Freeride this year and he suggested moving the secondary to A2. The hard shift occured also in the A1 position last year with th stock track.

I did double check the weigths and torgue to make sure nothing was binding on the primary.

I still think its the primary as the hard shift only started happening after I installed the clutch kit.

the clutch will engage and then once moving it will bite hard.
